  1. so don, why did you put it on backwards? it does look like it would give a better grip...
  2. great info here guys, thanks! i know what too much pressure looks like. my 270 has pushed a few primers in it's day. one was just gone. i don't know where it could have gone... anyway, thanks again. i was planning on using 4350 seeing that gave good results on the different bullets and weights i planned on using... i guess i'll short charge and trickle... which is what i do with my 270. i guess i need to dig out the trickler. i have another box of factory remington 165s. i'll put those on paper and check the new scope, then try some of the test loads. again, you guys rock!
  3. anyone use electronic powder scales? how's the accuracy on the more economically priced models? i just dont know if i can trust something that i can't see it working... also, does everyone use powder measurers to throw the charge and check every so often, or do you just measure each load? i have in the past just measured each load, but that's pretty time consuming. i've never used the powder thrower, and again, a little untrusting... and lastly, i am trying to develop a load for my 30/06 that doesnt like factory ammo much, and wondering how many of each load do you make up? 10? more? Less? i am working with 180 grain sierras and also want to make up some 150s or 165s... i need to get the rifle shooting back on the paper after a scope change... should i go back to the factory loads to sighting purposes and then switch to hand loads? when developing a load and loading a small number (how many again?), how many steps do you take between starting loads and max loads? does it all depend on how the accuracy goes and the pressure signatures? and for a guy without a chronograph, do i just check case expansion and other pressure signals for safety?
  4. "39% Dixie. You are definitely a Yankee." from the northwest..... :~
  5. well, i test fired my first completed project, a 30/06, weekend before last. the good news is it didn't blow up.... i did the redneck bore sight on it, looking down the barrel and scope to get the scope somewhat close then fired at 25 feet to confirm. it was shooting a bit to the right and low, but five shots were almost touching. things were looking good. i cleaned the Adams & bennet bore after each of the first 5 shots, and the bore seemed to be fouled after each shot. maybe i got one of those rough A&B barrels? anyway, i moved out to 100 yards after getting close to the bull at 25 yards, and got kind of the same result: to the right, but this time a little high. after slight adjustments, i was left and high. high is ok, as it was only about 2 inches at 100, so that would translate pretty well to 200 and beyond. another tiny tweak to bring th scope back to the center, and then i shot farther left and higher! figuring it was just a flinch or something, i tried several more times, all still to the left and high. i let my dad and our shooting partner shoot, and they came up with the same result. adjusting the scope didnt seem to matter. i was cleaning after every few shots and keeping the barrel cool. using different bore cleaner it appeared as though the bore didnt foul horribly. i was first using some remington bore cleaner in a yellow bottle, and every patch came out black as night, even after repeated cleanings. i switched to hoppes copper solvent, and things didnt appear as bad. maybe the rem cleaner was removing the bluing in the barrel? this was all done using remington corelok factory cheapie ammo. i am switching the scope over to my old redfield 2x7 (from the leupold vari-x II 2x7 used in the test) due to the 1/4 minute dot that i like better than a duplex. hopefully the scope will perform better - taking adjustments instead of ignoring them. the leupold was a second had from my uncle, and i have never shot with it before. it will probably be fine on a 22 or something.... i am also loading up some handrolled shells to see if i can find something it likes to eat better than factory cheapie stuff. anyone have any pet loads for a 30/06? i have some ancient 180 grain speer spire points, and am looking for some 150 loads, as well as 165/168. all shooting was done from a heavy rest and the last 3 shots were on the 300 yard gong (a 2'x2' hunk of steel) with 3 hits - aiming at the upper right hand corner, hitting the lower left corner... :~ so, overall, it was a success, but a bit disappointed with the results. like i said, at least it didn't blow up!
  6. i like this one! http://forums.accuratereloading.com/eve/fo...043/m/162101925
  7. banned substance at school, so we carried in our front pocket or behind our belt buckle....
  8. http://www.goodeatsfanpage.com/Humor/Music..._the_kettle.htm this one doesnt have the visual element, but it's the song all the same... :-) and here is the video version.... http://www.teklock.com/mike/chowmein.swf
  9. z1r, that's simply fantastic. we should all be so lucky to have your talent. congratulations!
  10. a pellet gun to the belly ought to do the trick... it's quiet and it will give them enough time to run away and, well......... you get the rest.
  11. fritz gives good advice... start with something good (bell and carlson) and make it better (bed it yourself)
  12. i have to agree with occasionally looking at your credit report. when i tried to buy a house, i found out that i already owned one, and i was married with 2 kids to a wonderful man..... well, at least my sister was! i guess the different birth dates and social security numbers, (not to mention sex!) were not enough to keep the confusion from surrounding heath and heather harmon. i will concede that our social security numbers are only 2 digits off with the last four being transposed, but come on! she's three years older than me and A GIRL!
  13. well bubba, with a barreled action strung up in a tree with duct tape, i'm afraid to say you have earned your screen name! glad the action's holding....
  14. got bored at work today.... thought this would be fun....
  15. 22/250, 6mm rem, 220 swift, 257 roberts, 308, 30/06, 7mm mauser, 8mm mauser, 8mm/06, 35 whelen... you get the idea!
  16. isnt the 6.8 grendel or rem 6.5 SPC cartridge based on the 35 rem? i tried to find info on the 35 rem, but it wasnt in my hornady reloading book. i was looking for case head size and COL and all that.... i thought one of the new rounds 6.8/6.5 would be neat ona mauser.

  18. skaggs gunsmithing could probably make it happen...
  19. if you are a decent human being and not causing trouble for others, i'd say you're ok. black, white, yellow, purple, decent people are decent people. and assholes are assholes, color has no influence.
  20. i wonder how many are quite profficient at swimming rivers..... ;-)
  21. i've taken to burying a bit (ok, a lot) of dog schitt in the hole, covered by a layer of dirt. my little white has her favorite holes, but no more! she might scratch the surface, but gets no further than that! no cactus in my area... but dog schitt, i have an abundance of! my latest tragedy is the other night she was sleeping on the bed with us... and in the morning, a wet spot. i hoped it was just drool or something, but no. it was pee. thankfully it was not super odiferous urine, but it's urine none the less... good thing she's cute, or i'd have ripped her little face off by now.
  22. i think it depends on caliber.... don't some cases have less taper than others? perhaps someone with actual experience might chime in... my cherry is firmly intact! :-)
  23. a guy could probably build a really trim, light weight rifle out of a mauser if one were so inclined to have a bolt action single shot.... it shouldn't be that much harder with practice to quick reload like a break action..... damn, another idea! URGH! the wife already hates my collection.... (although maybe she won't notice another addition.....)
  24. not too sure about it, but i'd look at http://e-gunparts.com/ they have lots of parts for lots of guns, but i don't know about shipping overseas...
  25. yeah FC, someone's smokin' something..... (crazy)
