  1. this is what was recommended to me by z1R for a stone to do the receiver with... Norton Sharpening Stones Shape: Rectangle Grit Grade: Coarse/Fine Width: 2 Length: 8 Thickness: 1 Material: Aluminum Oxide Manufacturer Part Number 61463685565 $24.07 From..... MSC Direct as far as stones for internal raceway stuff, i always thought those sandpaper mandrels that midway/brownells sells were the trick. and there has been recent talk about companies that heat treat. i cant remember off the top of my head, but if you look back a page or two, you'd probably find it. blanchards, maybe? seems to come to mind....
  2. anyone have size/weight/shootablity comparisons between this PA63 and the P64 sold by SOG (for one)? they both look a lot like a walther, and i've heard good things about the P64. only $10 difference.... anyone handled both?
  3. alright, i guess i'll let you guys in on how much TV i watch.... the original CSI, the shield, rescue me, scrubs, the british Antiques Roadshow (we americans are so dumb), Mile High (BBC), Coupling (again, British), Cash in the Attic (BBC), Flip This House, Dirty Jobs, Monster Garage, Mythbusters, Overhaulin, Miami Ink, the Powerblock on Spike, The Ultimate Fighter, and, you guys are gonna laugh....... Gilmore Girls. I know, I know, but my wife got my on it, and the dialog is nice and snappy, and Lauren Graham is not unattractive.... and, oh god, i can't believe i'll tell you this, but Buffy The Vampire Slayer in the mornings while i eat breakfast. I'll also watch just about anything on the History or Learning Channel. When i get home, i want to relax and turn my mind off most times, so i watch kinda off the wall stuff. i also have a little 19" TV on my workbench to keep me occupied while i stare at mausers and blocks of wood..... :-)
  4. that table sure isn't a very good example of what i know as zebra wood. the second pic with the high contrast in grain is more what i've seen. my neighbor builds 1911 grips with the stuff, along with snakewood (price it online sometime, it'll blow your socks off), cocobollo, bubinga, african thuey.... here is an example of african thuey that he did for my dad's kimber... http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a14/724wd/100_4082.jpg
  5. well fritz, the dinner was excellent! a couple live lobsters, some tomatoes, spices, pasta, asparagas and french bread... mmmm, mmmmm, good! it was a real experience, cooking lobsters, but it came out very well (ok, i may have cooked them just a tad too long, they were just a touch on the tough side). i also found a small bottle of the same wine we had at our wedding and some petit fours for dessert. man, what a mess i made! hope all of you had a nice day with your loved ones (no, not your mausers... the other loves of your lives!)
  6. flowers on friday as a suprise, and tomorrow night, homecooked lobster dinner!
  7. wouldn't a half octogon barrel be square? 8/2=4... there is a guy here in spokane that was known for triangle barrels. pretty neat looking, intergral vented rib like a shotgun... i think i still have the business card somewhere, if you're interested. couple that with a lighweight synthetic stock and some creative lightening of the action (bolt handle, lightweight bottom metal, titanium firing pin, etc... ) you could get down there in weight, but like the others i have to ask, why? lighter guns have more felt recoil, or at least "sharper" recoil.
  8. here's a face for the name...
  9. well, i'm Heath, and i am a English/Scot/German Mutt of a graphic designer. i work for a weekly alternative newpaper with an office full of liberal anti-gun/hunting democrates (there are a few sportsmen here... makes for interesting meetings!) in spokane, Washington (www,inlander.com). i was born and raised in Walla Walla, WA on 13 acres bordering a lot more... i've hunted and fished for what seems like forever, and hope i never have to stop. i got my degree from a focused community college, and have done a lot of different jobs in my search for a "real" job. i've laid flooring, sold flooring, worked for a fence company cutting pipe and packing fittings for crews, warehouse, forklift.... pretty much anything besides design! for the last 3+ years, however, i have been chained to the box... i started building mausers in about '98. bought a couple at Big 5 because they were mausers like my Browning FN safari. i love metal working, woodworking/carving/cabinetry, hunting, fishing, cars & trucks (1972 chev 4wd, hence the member name, and a 1929 chevrolet coupe destined to be a streetrod) and several other hobbies my wife wishes i didnt have. Married for 2 years this coming june to a teacher, so that makes it interesting come election time. luckily she was born and raised in Montana with a sportsmans family (who escaped from Laos in the late 1970's), so for the most part, we see things eye to eye... HA HA. i love her, inspite of her liberal colleagues. my mom is an administrator at walla walla community college and my dad owns a body shop that was started a month before i was born 28 years ago (come april). they're divorced, so i do double duty on the holidays, that's always loads of fun... my stepmom recently joined the Mormon church... not real sure why, but if it makes her happy, whatever.... half of my dad's family is Mormon and live in SLC, but they don't acknowledge us that aren't mormon. I learned (and still learn) about metalworking from my dad. his methods are a little old school, but so's most everything I do, too. Kinda like building a gun instead of buying one... but where's the fun in that? so, that's pretty much me in a nutshell... a bloody great big nutshell!
  10. FC, i have tried to find someone that actually KNOWS the biesens.... i'd love to talk to them a little bit. being in the same city (and only about 3 miles away) i still can find only those that "knows a buddy who is a buddy of them".... thanks for the address.... maybe i'll give it a shot!
  11. tony, as a graphic designer, if you are looking a logo for the header, i'd love to help! might even have some ideas, if you don't already. pm me, email, ignore me, or whatever
  12. i think my membership is up this month... that's what they keep telling me, anyway. i suppose it is better than being a member of Peta or the Sierra Club...
  13. we had the exact same scenario here in spokane a few years ago. the kid took over the school with hostages and what not. when the swat team went in, he aimed a gun at them, and he was shot several times. the only bummer is he lived. he is in a wheelchair, mentally deficient (was shot in the head) and yes, his parents have sued. several times, i think. cant think of the outcome right now, but i know his dad thinks the cops should have shot him in the leg, or negotiated more, blah blah... no mention of his fault for not teaching his son right from wrong.... if you want to research it, try spokane Washington, lewis and clark high school shooting.
  14. tony, i had a picture of a taxidermy form from van dykes catalog that i blew up. it was only the right side, so i had to make up the rest, so you could say some of it was freehand.... by the way, she loved it, of course! just wait until you guys see the elk bust with bronze horns.....
  15. http://i8.photobucket.com/albums/a14/724wd/email1.jpg well, here it is! it has 4 coats of tung oil and is a little darker than the pictures show... i guess it pays to have a good photographer to make you look good... i epoxied some pins in the slate base with cooresponding holes in the feet to make it less prone to moving, while still allowing it to be removed for repairs if nessecery. for those that didnt see it in the my project guns thread, it is carved from tigerwood and is about 15 inches long. my step mom will be the recipient of it come christmas morn.... kinda have to make up for missing her birthday ( i was even there at their house deer hunting and STILL forgot! )
  16. alright Indian Creek, we're gonna need more info.... how did you do it, what did you use, everything....
  17. good to have you back! and off to a nice start again, i see!
  18. fritz, i have sent my C&R to brownells and midway...but my prices seem like they are still gen. pop. prices. how do i see what the discount will be? do i have to put the items in my cart?
  19. ok, with my C&R, do i have to log in the spanish small ring i just bought? i bought it from a buddy in the same state, so there was no paperwork involved. am i ok to not mark it in my bound book?
  20. montea6b, have you ever tried to engage the safety with your left thumb? i do not posess the filangial fortitude (thumb strenth on the up-stroke) to do so. my dad has an FN with the left side safety and the engagement force required dictates that you use more than your thumb. I agree, disengaging the safety is second nature, but to engage the safety is tough.
  21. I like the DAYTON TRAISTER MARK II SAFETY (Sporter Express $19.99 Item #: 400-116). it hangs to the right side and is pretty easy to install. you will need to notch the bolt shroud a little bit, no big deal. also you will have to bevel an edge on the cocking piece, but i think you will with most of them. I have been tempted to get one of the left side $9.99 safeties from Sporter Express just to see how they work. my preference is right side because i find it easier to engage the safety with my right had than take my left hand off the fore end to work it. disengaging the safety is easy either way. i know some like the side-swing Mod 70 style, and if i could find one that was affordable and looked good, i'd probably have one, too, but the modified military shoroud conversion doesnt appeal to me. i have no experience with the Bueler safety that attaches with the screw, not sure how they work.
