  1. well! quite the table, thanks! one thing that stands out in my head, however is the SAAMI spec for 8mm Mauser is considerably less at 35,000cpu than either the 6.5x55 at 46,000 or the 7x57 at 51,000. would then the 8x57 be a safer cartridge for a small ring? what other factors go into deciding what cartidge is safe for a small ring other than SAAMI specs? i always thought the .257, 6.5x55, 7x57 and .300 savage were the ones to look at on a small ring....
  2. my Hornady reloading books dont seem to list the SAAMI pressures for their cartidges, so i was wondering if any of you guys may have found a list somewhere...? in particular i am looking at the pressure difference of 7x57 and 6.5x55. these are the calibers i am contemplating for my spanish small ring. edit: seems with further searching both are 46,000 cpu. anyone have other data?
  3. no, windage screws are fine. those other links are the ticket. i am trying to find some locally...
  4. that red stock is the pattern, right? i wouldnt think you'd cover that beautiful grain, but i have seen some pretty strange stuf.....
  5. Anyone know a source or size and thread for a Leupold 1 piece mount? i tried brownells, but got lost in the millions of sub-directories.... the mount for my 30/06 only has 1 screw left, the other two having broken ears.
  6. wow swampthing! so that's a tung oil finish, huh? i would have guessed a polyuethane spray on with that kind of shine! excellent work!
  7. you know, my uncle has some llamas at one point, too. and he shot them, too! george and snowball ended up as hamburger from what i understand, mixed with beef to kill off some of the llama flavor... true story! not too sure on your pistol grips, but how much are standard 45 holes off?
  8. yeah, pierced primers dont sound good at all! .055 it is!
  9. i had .055 to .065 as my goal ... but will adjust, thanks!
  10. sounds like a good plan of action....thanks!
  11. ok, on my newly returned 30/06, the firing pin protrusion was .045, so i looked through the other firing pins that i had and found one that was long enough, but it measures .070-.075. anyone have a favorite no lathe way to shorten these little buggers? just start filing it off, keeping the tip round?
  12. yeah, a little slow now and then...not always though...
  13. ok, here's a question... WHY did they take the guns? the murderer was in custody, and from what i understand, the weapons he used were most likely a .40 caliber hand gun. so, were all 54 guns .40 caliber handguns? were all 54 guns handguns? Have the parents used any of these firearms to commit a crime? did they ask the parents who owned the guns? In the article, they said they (the police? the news media?) did not know if the guns belonged to the parents or murderer. and where would a young man get the $$ to purchase 54 guns? he was driving his parents car... did they take the clothes out of his closet, too? he bought some of those, undoubtably. he might have even wore some of them while commiting this crime. so, why did the police feel the need to remove the guns from a house that a murderer no longer resided in? and yes, i believe the story was run due to the sensationalism of 54 GUNS! OH MY GOD! THE HORROR! GUNS! EVIL, EVIL GUNS! please, people, listen to fritz. no matter what, if you are interested in a subject, do as much research as you can and form your own opinions, those hopefully not based on what you read in the paper or seen on tv. those media outlets are based on what will sell. it is and always has been about $$. Sensationalism sells more than the ordinary (or often times the good things that happen). and just so everyone knows, i work for a weekly alternative newpaper. i do not agree with most of what is printed by the editorial side ( i am a graphic designer) due to the slant they put on everything. i think you know what direction the slant leans.... but their check clears every week, and working so closely with those whos ideas are so radically different from mine provides many opportunities for lively discussions! heath
  14. now that's some info i didn't know! of course i would still respect the pressure limits, but never having had the opportunity to dissasemble a small ring, i have been walking around all this time not knowing! cool! learn somethin' new every day! Hopefully he still has it...it was about 3 weeks ago i talked to him...
  15. z1r, i think we are on the same wave length.... now as long as my wife doesn't find out... what's one more?
  16. there really is no way to check for setback without pulling the barrel, is there? here's the deal. a guy i know mentioned that he has a Spanish Hornet (never heard that term before) small ring 7x57 (possibly Oveida?). he is kinda looking to get rid of it and i heard him say $25. i have emailed for more info. my idea would be light weight plinker. if the barrel is good, shorten it and contour out the steps, create a gas deflection ring for the shroud, machine 2 gas ports in the bolt, light stock with blind magazine, that sort of thing.... if a small ring had gas deflection shroud like a 98 and gas ports like a 98, would that not make them more "safe" like a 98? if i am not mistaken, those are the major changes that make a 98 "safer". i am not talking about chambering for 300 win mag, but 7x57 type cartridges without as much worry about a face full of hot gas...
  17. ok, lets say there is a Spanish Mauser, small ring 93 or 95. The steel should be fine, right? the trouble the Spanish had was with the overhardened large rings, right? i know, i know, small rings are not as "safe" as large rings. not concerned right now. just want to know if there is anything to watch for with the steel on a Spanish small ring. heath
  18. the day (or maybe day after) Mark recieved my rifle, he called and said he was working on it. i had it back in a week. and if you have any questions or time constraints, call him. seems like a heck of a guy!
  19. well, thanks for the kind words! this particular piece of wood is tiger wood. it was about $70 for a 4inch x4inch x3feet chunk. it's kinda like gunstock wood, a nice chunk is worth some bucks... i also have currently going 2 small mouth bass from tiger maple and an elk bust from walnut. I want to cast the elk horns in bronze, but i have to figure out how, first. the cougar is my 3 carving that is nearing completion. the first was a trout in cedar that i gave to my father for fathers daya few years ago. the other was another trout from regular old 2x4 for a friend who was getting married. 2x4 is not the best to work with. it never lost the whiskers, but the recipient thought it was great. carving is not that difficult. it is much like stockwork, you just remove whatever is not a stock (or cougar, or elk or fish) . a good bandsaw helps, too!
  20. So, I just wanted to throw my .02 in on Mark Skaggs. I had a fantastic experience having him barrel my 30/06. super fast, great work, and he didnt even laugh too hard at some of my silly requests. When we played phone tag and i didnt get back to him in time, Mark went ahead and squared the bolt face. he tried to pass it off like no big deal, and said dont worry about paying for that part, but hey, guys running a business, right? So basically, i have no qualms about sending him my next project, unless i can teach myself how to do it by then...probably better send it to him..
  21. alright, here are some pics of most of my project guns. foreground to back, yugo m24/47 (to become 6mm rem), BNZ43 (to become 35 Whelen), turk M38 (to become 7x57) and a 1950 Win Mod 70 in .270 having stock refinished and reblued. this is my Chilean Steyr 1912 that is all numbers matching, beautiful gun, should have left it alone. this is the one the "gunsmith" twisted. Fajen stock with added darker walnut grip cap and forend tip (old butcher block). that was a fun project - adding the tip and cap. I also modified this stock to have a slight palm swell as seen in the first photo. still up in the air on this one. i may throw on a 6.5x55 barrel and see if it shoots. if it doesnt, i'd like to do a tweede - (starting with a commercial large ring barrel - not a military, obviously) on another turk. Not pictured is the 1943 German Mod 98 (with swastikas and all intact) that is on it's way back from Skaggs gunsmithing after having a 30/06 barrel installed. when it gets back, i'll add it - in it's bell & carlson camo'd stock. (hopefully here today!) well, these are my gun projects as of now. here are a few shots of one of my carvings that's approching completion. forgive the splice in the middle...camera wouldn't shoot wide enough...
  22. well guys, i spent 5 days stalking around the hills this year for elk with a .270, and did not feel undergunned. we are only allowed to shoot spikes, but even after a big bull, i am confident enough in my rifle, bullets and myself to shoot at 250 yards, about the limit of what you can see... the area i hunt, it is not terribly difficult to stalk within shooting range. in fact during bear season this year, my dad and I were treated to the scene of two mature (one 6x7 with super long, thick tines whos horns were a bit narrow and one 6x6 who was super wide, but tines were a little short and stubby) fighting. we were upwind, and they battled for almost 10 minutes solid. the heavy horned bull had blood on three tines on the left side. they fought back and forth as we watched from behind a wild rose bush and by the time we got nervous, they were an HONEST 10 feet from us! call BS if you want, but i kow what i saw, and it was amazing! with only a shrinking rosebush between us, my dad raised his arms and whooped at them. they were not going to stop, and would have run us over! being upwind, they still had no idea what we were, even after spooking them. so, moral of the story, get close!
  23. so z1r, is it only the rottenstone portion of this "recipe" that you avoid? (other than not finishing to 1800) i am refinishing a pre-64 model 70 stock in the near future, and dont want to just spray some acrylic on it...
  24. morgansboss, i am curious as to the shooting position on son #2's .270 in claw mounts. that scope looks AWFULLY far back for normal shooting...
  25. what is a rotten stone? i have heard this term a few times, but not seen an explaination.
