  1. is it true 23000 teachers got shitcanned today in CA? it's all over facebook with my teacher friends...
  2. hope it's a good one, bud!
  3. i don't want to turn you off of the idea. if you want a 45/70 on a VZ, i'm sure it can be done. if you choose not to do it yourself, it will probably be expensive, but anything is possible. really, any caliber other than what the action was designed for might or will require some work to get it to work in your VZ. if you stick with a caliber with the same head size, it may feed great, might need some work. if you want something else, well, then you've got a bit of work ahead of you. if you feel up to the challenge, it's a lot of fun! and we're here to help. there's some great and very talented guys here on the board.
  4. this is usually done on the siamese mauser actions. they come with a trigger guard/mag box that is slanted rearward, allowing the rimmed shells to stack correctly, without the rims getting tangled up. there may be a way to adapt this mag box to your VZ, though i don't know that for sure. you will also have to deal with the feed rails, opening them up for the greater diameter and rimmed 45/70 round. extraction will have to be addressed, as well as the diameter of the bolt face.
  5. the DB is shorter, thinner, WAY lighter... i love my p64, it shoots great, handles well, all that, but the weight is really it's downfall. the DB fits so well in my pocket, you dont even notice it. i bought some suede today to make a holster. damn, i need to find the ammo boxes he was looking at, but it was right there in front of me! i swear!
  6. with warm weather coming, my P-64 9x18 is wearing me down. it's hard to conceal with just a t-shirt, and being all steel, it's not really pocket friendly. so..... stopped at a small gun shop the other day and fondled this little guy... http://www.diamondbackfirearms.com/ i really liked the size of it, and it felt good in hand. enough grip to get a full 2 fingers on it, unlike the kel-tec and others. stopped in again and was comparing a Smith with CT laser grips in .38 and this. $200+ more for the Smith, and then the counter man showed me the difference in .380 and .38. the .380 has more energy! i'll be damned... it does! so, the baby glock came home with me. gonna make a pocket suede holster for it and do some break in shooting. then, i showed it to my neighbor, and then next day he calls me to come see his new toy... the sig p238 equinox! a micro 1911 in .380, it's a beauty, but i like the feel of the diamondback in hand better. the backstrap swell helps a lot.
  7. agreed that the .416 is pretty astounding, but it's really a monster! will the .416 require more box mods?
  8. well, there's big, and then there's "OW! Chit! my shoulder! my retinas!" that's why i was leaning towards the .404. why the .416, if you don't mind me asking...
  9. am i gonna shoot DG? probably not, but better to be prepared... between 404 Jeff and 416 Rigby, i'm leaning towards the 404. what says the peanut gallery?
  10. yeah, ken's got some work ahead of him! if i remember correctly, they need the ejector slot cut, ejector box screw hole drilled and tapped, final machining and heat treat... have fun ken!
  11. politically my wife and I cancel each other out. she's a teacher and has bought in to all the BS pushed by the NEA and WEA. opposites DO attract, as she's very different than i am in many facets, and lately it's kinda been pissing me off...
  12. rem would never change the barrel since they didn't make the 798's. all they did was import them as zastava made them. the C/H ring adds another layer of safety that is beneficial to action strength. without it, you'd have the pre-98's. the p-14's and 1917's make good big calibers because the physical size of the action doesnt require the work like a standard 98. i'm sure if given a choice, most builders would choose a magnum mauser action over a 14/17.

hope everything is good over there. let us know...
  14. you guys are crap at talking a guy out of something! http://www.gunbroker.com/Auction/ViewItem.aspx?Item=158118385
  15. that's a terrible thing to do to a guy, brad! shoot, i need NOT to buy it! i still need to send my yugo bolt to z1r for a new handle, i need a lot more things than another project... but it's such a neat looking gun! are they CRF? do they make good DGR's?
  16. i had a chance at a 30S a couple of years ago. 30/06, decent shape, but someone got happy with the buffing wheel and all the letters were smeared. $300 and i passed. glad i did, too. sure wasn't as nice as the one in your pic!
  17. the one i'm looking at already has the ears removed, quite competently, and is not drilled or tapped. the duck pond is also not filled, but as i was thinking an open sighted DGR in, oh, heck, 375 or 404 or 458, you know, the standards... it would be nice. the stock is a well laid out custom with decent wood. price is good... ugh! i'll just have to wait it out. this, too shall pass.
  18. someone needs to tell me i DON'T need an Enfield 1917... i DON'T need a large bore DG rifle... i NEED to finish the projects i have going already... ugh... the sickness is BAD this week!
  19. thanks friend. i had a chunk of 7075 shipped to tanglewood. if for some unlikely reason rod decides he can't do it, i'll let you know.
  20. rod, i agree mig would not be the best choice for the average yahoo not familiar with the intricacies of correctly using such a machine. that isn't the case with my bolt, as I have been welding for several years and am quite proficient. i do understand the abilities and limitations of the mig, and was sure to get good penetration with the professional Miller my dad owns at his body shop on both the bolt and handle. being slated for a 7x57, i don't see this gun failing me at such a time as a grizzly bearing (no pun intended) down on me, as grizzlies are quite scarce in SE Washington. So yes, you're right, properly done a tig is surely better than mig, but i'd wager my bolt won't fail any time soon!
  21. dang... now i wished i'd voted no and been the first one! oh well... happy birthday!
