FC
The ice storm has devastated our area in SC. Second day of no power or running water. I have a smart phone. No stores at all open this a.m. from what I'm told. I had to chainsaw our way out both ways down the road. Seems nobody else had one. At least neighbors moved limbs. Old lady across the road, and elderly next door neighbors (we're in the country) refused to come over. I cut downed pines in his driveway. Power line was laying right there, but was dead. We're sort of managing with a fireplace and rain barrel water. We turn on the generator as needed.
Dr.Hess
Kinda been there, done that. We were 7 days without power in '09. You think a lot about what you can do to be more comfortable the next time. At least we had water. As a FYI, you can boil water to drink it. Bringing it to a good boil is all that is needed. That is, you don't have to boil it for 10 minutes, just bring to a good boil. And, from what I've read, 4 drops of Betadyne per Liter of water, 8 drops if really turbid, shake well, let sit a half hour, safe to drink. Cut the Betadyne taste with a little vitamin C. Fresh household bleach: 5 drops per liter. Shake, let sit in a sealed container, pour from glass to glass to oxygenate and get rid of the chlorine taste. Dr.Hess
Also, you can always drain the water heater. There's 40+ gallons of good potable water in that.
karlunity
Can you get space at the BOQ on Base? I would think a light Col could pull some stings? karl
ken98k
Can you get space at the BOQ on Base? I would think a light Col could pull some stings? karl Hell, a lieutenant colonel was getting up towards god level when I was in. If I remember correctly, we had a light colonel for base commander at Camp Drum.
FC
Snow melted but still no power. Woman at work lent us an electric heater. There is no kerosene or any sort of heater on the shelves. I had to chainsaw oaks and pine over the road that blocked in the neighbors. Old fella next door has a power line down the length of his driveway.Darned cold last night, and out of dry and seasoned firewood. At least there is gas now. Even part of Ft. Gordon has no power. You couldn't find a room, but we have to care for the dogs and chickens. There was nothing open to get something to eat anyway. Businesses are opening up. We found a kerosene heater at the auction in Columbia tonight. They don't have power outages, but still have no heaters at Sallie.
karlunity
Any chance of picking up some MRE's? I understand that they come with heaters? Hope all is well. karl
FC
Hi all, got power yesterday morning, but a lot of people don't have power. We saw two telephone poles snapped off at the tops in our neighborhood. Lessons were learned. Yup, MREs now come with magnesium, I think it is, to heat the meals. Just add water. Beats those old gasoline-powered heaters. How were things down in FL Karl?
karlunity
Well. we have power and the coldest it got was 35. Back up to 72 now. I think that we were the ONLY state that did NOT have snow. We did get a lot of cold, for Fl, rain but compared to other folks, i think that we did well. The Hippy and I are laying in a week's extra food, stuff that will keep but that is all. When you retire you might want to consider this place. karl

FC
I heard we had an earthquake at the same time as the ice storm half an hour north of here! I know- global climate change! WSJ calls it, "The catch-all phrase" anymore for any weird weather or occurrences.
