Feel free to add to the list. These just a few that came out of a conversation I had yesterday.

• Occam’s Razor: the simplest solution is most the often the one that holds the most truth

• Murphy’s General Law: by and large, everything that can go wrong will and most often at the least inopportune time

• Murphy’s Law of Inevitability: anything that may happen generally will in a matter of time

• Newton’s Third Law: for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction

• 1st Rule of Economics: there are no free lunches

• If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and swims like a duck, chances are it’s a duck.

• Hope for the best; prepare for the worst.

• If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.

Grief is not a sign of weakness

It is a sign of love

Pain can never be understood

It can only be endured

The faults you find in your children

are your failures as a parent

If you love your children

they will never be a disgrace to you

Enough for now

"Hope springs eternal"

That's my favorite one, and the one I am most "guilty" of. I suppose it's a good thing, but at the same time, it speaks volumes about my gullibility.

My signature--

Memory is a wonderful gift

For with it the best is never past

We carry thoughts of home in our hearts

To live in always though time has passed

Here's some local lingo:

In order to get the boat over the stump, Dad had to shower down on the motor.

I'll getcha that report Friday week.

I had some more that I thought of but forgot them as soon as I tried to write them down. I'll come back later, edit this, and add them if I can.

Fritz,

Basically, to gun it or to give it more gas... He had to stoke the engine hard to get us off that stump.

I've heard Dad say "shower down on it" for a long time and figured this wasn't a widely used expression. I think it sounds kind of neat though.

Would anyone else care to share some local speech expressions? I started this thread to highlight figures of speech, sayings, adages, proverbs - anything we say that sounds interesting or communicates a particular point. There has been a good response thus far; let's keep it going to a while longer. Just for the fun of it!
