roscoedoh
Feel free to add to the list. These just a few that came out of a conversation I had yesterday. • Occam’s Razor: the simplest solution is most the often the one that holds the most truth • Murphy’s General Law: by and large, everything that can go wrong will and most often at the least inopportune time • Murphy’s Law of Inevitability: anything that may happen generally will in a matter of time • Newton’s Third Law: for every action, there is an equal and opposite reaction • 1st Rule of Economics: there are no free lunches • If it walks like a duck, quacks like a duck, and swims like a duck, chances are it’s a duck. • Hope for the best; prepare for the worst. • If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is. roscoedoh
Here's some local lingo: In order to get the boat over the stump, Dad had to shower down on the motor. I'll getcha that report Friday week. I had some more that I thought of but forgot them as soon as I tried to write them down. I'll come back later, edit this, and add them if I can. fritz
Jason, I don't get it. What does shower down on the motor mean? fritz
roscoedoh
Fritz, Basically, to gun it or to give it more gas... He had to stoke the engine hard to get us off that stump. I've heard Dad say "shower down on it" for a long time and figured this wasn't a widely used expression. I think it sounds kind of neat though. --------------------- Would anyone else care to share some local speech expressions? I started this thread to highlight figures of speech, sayings, adages, proverbs - anything we say that sounds interesting or communicates a particular point. There has been a good response thus far; let's keep it going to a while longer. Just for the fun of it! Jason
