FC
Looked dirty, dark, and bad before refinishing. It's a gem!
Dr.Hess
Another beautiful piece. What does "quartersawn" mean?
FC
https://youtu.be/VvUPJPFg4wM short, good video to visualize it. It has to be a big tree to get decent sized boards.
Dr.Hess
Huh. This one popped up next. That's a eucalyptus. He said that quartersawn, it will bring AU$2500/cubic meter, and he gets about 50% out of the tree. Advantages are that it doesn't expand and contract like a conventional cut. FC
I’ve never seen anything built from eucalyptus. Maybe it’s very unstable?
Dr.Hess
I don't know. We had eucalyptus trees when I was a kid in California. Can't say I have ever seen the processed wood. The Aussie above said that a conventionally cut board would expand and contract to a point of a 6' table growing/shrinking 6mm over the course of a year, but not a quartersawn. FC
They were in Hawaii. The little bits I saw were soft. Probably warps easily.
