Just thinking out loud.....

All practacticality issues asside, like why are they closing in the first place.

Wouldn't it be nice to own your own gun manufacturer?

Keep the pre 64's rolling.

Revive the 1917 Enfield action in a sporterized version for the magnum builders.

With Charles Daley no longer coming from Zatzvia, build your own 98 actions with

full "C" rings

OK back to reality.....

Does anyone have a clue what it might take to keep Winchester open and turning

a profit?

Tough question. Among the problems facing Winchester at this facility is the union that all the machinists belong to. I have yet to read anything encouraging about them.

My thought is to move the plant to somewhere else in the US where there's a decently educated labor pool and non-mandatory union participation. Then, if you could pay the workers less, you could still produce $500 rifles that were of any quality. The real crux of the matter is that everyone wants to make $70 an hour and buy $400 rifles. Something's gotta give and apparently its quality control.

This is why so many firearms are made outside the US.

Well for one thing the USG could start buying rifles made in America.

They are; USG buys American made firearms produced under license right here by FN and Beretta.

The niceness would be worn off in bankruption court. It would be nicer to own a profitable gun manufacturer even if it only produced BB-guns. The sole purpose of a corporation is to increase the wealth of the owners. If US Repeating Arms cannot produce a quality product, sell it a price above their cost, and at price that enough people are willing to pay, then they deserve to go out of business. That is the law of free market capitolism. Is there some organization in American that do a better job than US Repeating Arms? Maybe, maybe not.
