Harbinger
First off I'd like to say howdy since this is my first post on here . Secondly: A friend of mine has given me a 1916 Spandau made G98 complete action, numbers matching aside from a low-profile safety latch in back which functions on the original mechanism but only allows fire and safe/free bolt movement. It has the "high arc" bent bolt and has been side tapped. This appears to be a period correct side-tap and my friend knows a couple gunsmith guys who agree that this was probably one of the original 18,000 or so WWI Sniper models. Now, granted, it could have been a WWII holdover at one point, but unfortunately he tore the complete rifle down years back before he even knew what he had because of how nice a lockup it has...so, other than his gunsmithing expertise and knowledge from some other friends of his there's no real way of ever knowing what it was. Now that I've rambled enough on the action, I was wondering if anyone on here would know the worth of this action alone (assuming it is a true scope model)...not that I plan on -ever- selling it but out of sheer curiosity. Also, because you guys seem to be quite friendly about modifications/sporterizing and knowledgeable I'm wondering if you have any suggestions in terms of barrels, stocks, so forth so on. So far I'm considering a Microfit blank from Richards, one of those Axiom types with pillar bedding, or even saving up and splurging on something like a McMillan. I do have a blued A-bolt barrel in .30-06 that a few have said could possibly be worked to fit on the action (since they are nice barrels), but I'd also like to know of any barrels people have had good luck with on this specific run of the M98 series. Also, sadly, I haven't been able to pick the action up physically so I won't be able to post any pictures for now.
ken98k
I would say somewhere around $200, maybe a little less. In my opinion the side tapping reduces the value unless you have the mount to go with it. Check GunBroker and AuctionArms for 98 actions for a comparison.
