Does anyone know of someone who can bend one of my straight bolts into K98 profile? Real K98 bolts seem to sell for a premium.

OMG! Where's my tin foil hat? You're reading my mind! Seriously, I had just bought a foodsaver being both a gardener and fisherman, I thought it would come in handy. My thought was to load plinking ammo in bulk and vacuum seal it in quantities that I'd normaly shoot in a range session. Seemed like a good idea since the absence of air would prevent corrosion during long term storage. I know they make a 8" wide roll but I think they also make a 6" wide roll that would be perfect for ammo.

The 6.8 SPC is based on a shortened .30 Remington case. I had thought about building a Mauser in .35 Remingtom myself. The .35 is still a fairly popular deer cartridge in my area. Granted, it's a woods cartridge in the same class as the 30-30, but the 200 grain .35 caliber bullet really get the job done at woods ranges. Regarding caliber choices for small rings, anyone consider the .300 Savage?

I generally consider myself a bolt gun kinda guy. I had planned on turning one of my Mauser actions into a 7.62x39 plinking gun. I kept looking at the expense and headache involved and asked myself if it was worth it over and over. Well I picked up a Yugo 59/66A1 for $100. Blue is about 90%, bright bore, only one dent in the stock, needs a good cleaning. I couldn't resist. An M44 followed me home in the same fashion about a year or so ago. Dumb question, Anyone else find themselves bringing things home they didn't really plan to?

I'm using a Timney with safety on mine now. I had originaly bought a Bold but I didn't have as much confidence in it's construction. It looked like it used some plastic parts and I just felt more confident going with the Timney. I'll probably be using the Buehler style safety on my next projects due to the stock design. Remember those Midway European style closeouts? Has anyone else had any trouble in the field with the Buehler safety while wearing gloves? Also, has anyone tried the Huber trigger?

That looks outstanding! I had heard the hole spacing for the rear mount was for the Weaver base and incompatible with the Leupold and Burris two piece bases. Is that an FN mount?

When D&T a Mauser for two piece bases, like Leupold or Burris. How do I use the Wheeler jig? Can I drill one of the holes for the rear base with the Wheeler jig and D&T the second using the rear base as an index? I know it was posted somewhere but I can't find it.

I've used RIG for years. so do all my family members. We've never seen rust on a gun protected with it.

I used a 2 piece Burris base on my .35 Whelen. The front ring was a couple hundreths higher than the rear base. I used Burris signature rings with offset inserts to compensate and as far as I can tell it worked like a charm. I figured not using shims would be more secure. As far as I could tell though, there was never a crest on the front ring. It didn't appear to be scrubbed either. On the rest of my projects I'm going to polish the receivers and leve the crests intact. They are very faint anyway and have not been scrubbed. I'm going to have them matte blued and the scope mount covers a large portion of the crest anyway.

Happy Thanksgiving all. Honestly I'm thankfull for the simple things. A great family, good friends, food on the table every day, a warm home and I guess all the things we sometimes take for granted. I was on vacation for a week for deer season. Today is my first day back to work. It may sound like a bummer, but I'm also thankfull that I have a job to go to where my coworkers are almost like family. We'll be celebrating at work today. On holidays we all bring something in. Main course will be rotiserie chicken from on of the local Middle-Eastern restaurants.

Where did you fond headspace guages for the argie? I don't find them anywhere.

TONEY, I think it's kinda similar to the "the 270 has light recoil" statement. I always think of recoil as subjective. my 270 kicks less than a 30-06 but I almost have to shoot both to feel it. The best way can describe it is noticebly more than I remember a 30-06 but not severe.

I finally finished my first build. A VZ24 in .35 Whelen Boyd's JRS stock pepper laminate Sunny Hill bolt shroud Timney trigger with safety Burris rings and bases Leupold VariX II 3-9 ER Shaw barrel at 23" Bedded with Bedrock including the barrel channel (barrel is free floated) I took it to the range today to zero it. Remington factory loads shot about 2 moa or less. I think the handloads I tested would have done much better but I only shot those at 50. For some reason I seemed to reach peak pressure rather quickly. I may try seating the bullet out a bit. But perhaps the barrel was warm and just needs to be broken in. Unfortunately I forgot my rest and sandbags and had to use the ones at the range. And.. since the %$@# battery was dead in my chronograph I have no idea what the velocity was. There were no flyers or stringing. In case anyone's inerested in what I'm loading, I'm using the Nosler 225 gr part, Reloader 15, Remington brass, and Federal 210M primers. I just wanted to thank all the posters here for their advice and tips. I'd like to post the names of all those that were helpfull but there are so many and I wouldn't want to leave anyone out.

Firefly was cancelled after one season. My wife likes it so much she bought the DVD set. We saw the movie the other day, and it's well worth seeing. What I find interesting about the weapons is that they are all somewhat "uncommon" I don't recall ever seeing a Glock, Sig or anything a non enthusiest would instantly recognize.

Nice bedding job! I was hoping for a pic. Is the stock relieved just a bit at the rear of the tang also? I thought I remembered reading that it was necesary to prevent a crack from forming there.

My Mauser sporter is finally at the "bedding stage". The front ring/recoil lug and rear pillar are all set. I have the barrel bedded out 2" and might bed the first 2 1/2" and free float the rest. How far out do most of you bed the barrel before free floating? I took what I thought was the balance point into consideration. (leaving no strain on the receiver). Anyway, does anyone full length bed a Mauser receiver? It's tempting but it looks like it could get a bit hairy.

I used Ready Strip by "Back to Nature Products" on my M44. The spray on stripper I used had no detectable odor and worked very well. It's supposed to be safer than other strippers. I also tried their "wash" and it left the stock very clean. I now have most of the oil removed from the stock also. After washing it, I rubbed it down with mineral spirits several times. Convinced it wasn't working well enough but removing a lot of the oil, I put it in a padded vice and went over it with a heat gun wiping off the oil as it bubbled up being careful not to singe the wood. Afterward I washed it with hot water and dish soap. It looks dry now, but I'm letting it set for a few days before I wash it again. I'll do my sanding when it's dry at that point.

I just bought the Millenium Pro PT745. For those unfamiliar with it, it's a 6+1 shot 45 ACP with the same frame size as the 9mm and .40 cal versions. There were no malfunctions with any of the ammo including 200 gr lead swc and 185 gr jacketed swc handloads. I've put about 200 rounds through it so far. The velocities were disapointing and made me doubt my chronograph readings. But, 115 gr ball clocked at a bit over 1100 fps out of a 9mm PT111. Speer 230 gr Gold Dot 690 fps Winchester 230gr SXT 760 fps Remington 185 gr Golden Saber 890 fps Remington UMC 230 gr Ball 715 fps The results are from memory, I didn't have a pen at the range. Recoil was stout but easier to control than my Smith Airweight .38 spl. I thought if anyone was looking at one of these they might find this interesting.
