    K98 Action

i realize i have little insight, especially compared to these folks. im a rookie through and through, but im lucky enough to be a tool and die man by trade, with all the tools necc. i have the ambition, but not the experience. the wealth of knowledge available here is unrivaled. with the guidance i've gotten here, i've been able to do everything myself. i take great pride in my work, and i'm proud to say im just about done with my first rifle.
  4. i must say, its people like you, and tutorials like this, that i joined!!!!! thanx
  5. i know this sounds weird, but i found a 9" south bend at a yard sale for $75. had it for a while, decided i couldnt do as much as i needed, so i listed it on ebay. the guy that bought it had a friend that had 13 x 40 rockford. bought it for $500, with a ton od tooling. sold the south for $400. not a bad break. ive found getting the word out to friends has worked wonders for me. there are tons of auctions in my area, sometimes they really work out.
  6. i guess thats where i lucked out, my boss has every toool makers accreditation ive ever heard of, and we have a couple of special grinders. so he actually worked with me on a small ring tap. but i certain ly understand where you're coming from. best of luck.
  7. once i threaded my rem bbl for a turk action, i was .157 long(or there abouts, i cant quite remember), and still had to shorten another .045 to align the sight holes. but as far as the reamer goes im with the rest, sounds like the pilot is tight, it doesnt take much.
  8. i guess my feeling would be; where is the reward in going down to walmart, and buying a gun? i would rather make one. i find so much satisfaction in that. i dont build a gun because its cheaper, or easier. i find reward in a job well done. i guess some people embrace a challenge while other people may turn and walk away for one. i dont do this for money, around here, theres no real demand, the two local gunsmiths petered out, didnt do enough bussiness to justify the insurance. i think thats sad. but i also think its indicative of todays society. now you can thnik what ever you want, but i think comparing it to chasing a white balls around grass is a little harsh.
  9. im with alberta on this one. i would make a tap. not very hard to do. though i like the challenge involved in make a jig to hold the receiver!
  10. ive got it printed out. only started to read it. wow! maybe that will be the next project.
  11. you know the saying, opinions are like #%!#^. im sure if 10 people gave ideas, you'd prob have nine different. all that matters is that you were succ. congrats!
  12. thanx alot guys, ive got a few on order from amazon. my library has nothing . i didnt realize there was a forum for these. thanx, FC
  13. i did my very best to make this to the tightest tolerances possible. there is zero slpo, but still goes together easily. to drill the holes like you asked, i would make another plate that bolted to side of the jig, measure out the hole spacing, drill and ream for drill bushings. when i was assured all is square and located to my satisfaction, i would drill away. i wish i knew how to make these smaller!!!
  14. not that i have done this, but with my scope drilling fixture i made. i could flip it sideways in a vice to drill the holes. i guess you dont have a milling machine, right? but i would drill the hole spacing i need in a plate. then make some drill bushings, then mount the plate to my base. presto! i dont know what you may have for a scope jig, but it would work on most any type i've seen. in theory it sounds simple. thats how i would do it.
  15. im wondering what books you consider gunsmithing must reads? i have the NRA updated, the walmart John Traister. and the Do it yourself book, jim carmichael on the way from amazon. (i hope its the right book) what other books do you recommend? i dont have a fortune to spend, but i want to pick-up some more books. does anyone have the guns, ith machinist, by steve acker? if so, how is it? recommend it?
  16. my wing was hardened. i did nothing more than install it. i annealed my shroud the very way you spoke of. though i cant speak for donmarkey
  17. i see a lot of posts abt heat treating actions. i hate to say this but i had to use heat to disassemble my turk. before i did, i put a file to the corner of the ring. the action didnt seem to be very hard. it filed easily. im wondering if i should have it treated? and if so, to what hardness? i have a local shop in mind, dont know if they are willling to work with a gun though. so who do you recommend? any idea of pricing? thanx, roger I SHOULD ADD THAT I USED LITTLE HEAT. ONLY AS MUCH AS WAS NESS
  18. i have done a couple of these myself. i couldnt imagine doing it without a miller. possible, sure. but far too tedios for me. i purchased the chapman safeties, and on both had to make my own locking piece(the .250 part that locks the bolt closed when engaged) because my shrouds were oversize, and the piece would torque ever so slightly, and be very difficult to engage. i find, when done correctly, these can look very nice. i reallly like this kind of challenge, and find them very rewarding.
  19. i have yet to glass bed the bbl or action. otherwise all inleting and stock work is done. i wanted to clean the stock up before i went to much farther. i am NOT a woodworker, never have been very good at it. so i go very slow and hope for the best. sad i know. but im trying. i wanted to make sure the stock isnt wrecked before i bed the metal. i used acetone, and rubbing alcohol in small places to c which worked better. it seems like a toss up. i didnt have any mineral spirits. i hope to finish with the acetone tonight. i was @ structure fire late last night, so i accomplished very little. hopefully tonight. once again, i really appreciate all your help and opinions. having an asset like this is fantastic.
  20. embalming fluid huh? awesome guys, i really appreciate the help. i'll try this afternoon.
  21. i need some advice. this is my first full off re-everything. i got very careless with my walnut stock. when i was opening my stock for the bolt, i got my greasy paw prints all over it. im looking for the best way to clean it up. not finger prints, greasy smudges. its not junk is it? very much a newbie mistake, i know. help me please!!
  22. only being 29, i cant really relate to how things used to be, but i do my bolt handles the same as horse trader. i have done quitte a few this way, i always rough in with a mill, then file the rest
  23. i really appreciate your help. the reason i ask, is im finishing up my first total rebuild. ive done alot of threading for friends, ive built all my own tooling for lapping the bolt and innner shoulder, trueing the receiver etc. this is my first rebarrell. and you make the job much easier. thanx!!
  24. how do you prefer to mount a bbl on a turk. do you crush fit both shoulders even, just the inner, or just the outer? i have read opinions both ways, just wondering your preference is.
  25. nice job, that looks fantastic. i was wondering if you always blued your bolt? i never have, but it looks great.
