  3. I didn't think the post office would ship firearms or ammo. I always went to UPS. -Don
  4. Enough said, now I'm glad I never heard of it. I have no use for it. -Don
  5. I did that once, now I always either fully pillar bed or a least epoxy in an old stock bushing when glass bedding. -Don
  6. I've always welded a small piece of stock in front of the triggerguard and them milled (you could file just as acurate just takes more time) the front larger. If you look at a aftermarket trigger guard you'll see they're all (at least the ones I've seen) opened to the front, not the rear. Like Z1r said, thin guards tend to bend under higher recoil and If you're using a longer cartridge, you'll probably have higher recoil. But if the cartridge fit but only hang up every so often, I wouldn't be against dressing it down a little bit with a file. -Don
  7. Never heard of it, what's the hype? -Don
  8. The experience and knowing what you can do and what you can't far out way the price of a store bought product. Besides one day I might actually have a use for this knowledge, when a tool isn't available. -Don I've had good success with tap extractors, but you're right a punch on a brittle tap is much easier. -Don
  9. I never tried to make a tap, It's worth a try though. I only need one to chase out some threads on a receiver whose barrel was removed by action wrench that had too short off a clearance groove cut for the recoil lug and crushed the end of the treads. -Don
  10. I'll watch CSI, used to watch Law and Order but now I think I've seen them all. I'll still watch law and order ci though. That's about all my stomach can handle on tv except for technical stuff and history shows. I do like that 70's show too. -Don
  11. Do you know anyone that stocks them, brownells list dies but not taps, unless I'm looking in the wrong place. -Don

    Barrel vise

Try grinding flats in the barrel and install in the vice without bushings. -Don

    Barrel vise

I've had to epoxy the bushing to a stubborn barrel before. That barrel also took me on a 10' cheater bar while a friend hit with a 5lb. sledge. We were lifting my 300lb bench of the ground and had to bolt it to the concrete. I use a all metal vice with aluminum bushings now. Homemade, but exactly like brownells, that way I can use their bushings. -Don
  14. Throw the bolt away and leave it out in the rain/snow for a year and that's what mine looks like. -Don
  15. I've got a copy I can send you from Macfarland's book Intro to Modern Gunsmithing. (thanks Jason) But basically all you do is scribe a line 1/4" all from the bottom, transfering the shoulders too, and cut and line to the line. -Don
  16. http://technicalvideorental.com/ They have a large assortment of agi and metalworking video. I've kept some for over 3 weeks and they never charged extra. -Don
  17. I meant half oct and half round, oct at the base, a friend of mine up north has a custom win 70 made like this. I own a weatherby .30-378 and don't mind the recoil, so that isn't an issue. I know a surplus 98 action isn't the best for a lightweight gun and was thinking of getting a rem 700 in titanium. But building it is the fun part. Over half the guns I build either get sold or rebuilt into something else down the line. -Don
  18. I found a 3.5 oz triggerguard complete with floorplate, do you think a blind mag would be lighter? MB, a tracking rifle, carry many miles, shoot very little. Jason, .270 win. -Don
  19. Any ideas on lightening a 98 mauser. I found some real light hinged triggerguards that weigh only 3.5 oz compared to a 1909 assembly that weighs 10 oz. I think that would be lighter than a blind mag. I don't like the looks of fluted barrels, so was thinks of milling flats in a med contour barrel to give it that half octagon look. I also was thinking of millling grooves in the action under the wood line. I've hollowed stocks before will good success. Any thoughts. -Don
  20. I've got a rusted out Geha in 12ga, missing the bolt, but the other parts are they're. If you need pic or measurements I could get them for you. -Don
  21. montea6b, how's their inletting. I'd rather do the extra work than end up with gaps like Boyd's stocks. -Don

    STOCKS

I think they are comfortable to shoot, but not to carry. It seems too bulky to carry in the field. It'd be good for a benchrest rifle. -Don
  23. Now that's just wrong. Of course I just ordered 3 new bumper stickers! -Don
  24. We build 99% of the Panera Breads here in MI. I sure wish I would of invested in them back when they started and were St. Louis Bread. -Don
  25. That's what he gets for seeing his shadow! I'm tired of winter. -Don
