  1. Same sign at the Public Shooting range outside of Oroville Ca. about 5 miles West of the RCBS Plant.

    Phoenix

I have Family in Phoenix. Their impression of why Phoenix is there is "That is where the Horse died, Covered Wagon broke for the last time or the Car broke down and couldn't afford to have it fixed" Take your pick. I take it that outside of work and some Really Good Resturants, which came later, there is not much reason for Phoenix to be.
  3. Yeah, it figures. When an entity is forced to do what they have no interest in doing, they then Play the Game of "You Can't Win". If they could make it Harder and more Difficult they would.
  4. John Wayne did his part and it turned out to be an Important Part. He set a standard of Behavior that my NCOs' in Vietnam held us to. We knew it was just Hollywood, but it was behavior we could live with. No shame in what he did during WWII. My First Scout Master Join the Army Air Corps right after Pearl Harbor to Kill Japs, Nazis and Wops, Terms of the Day. He repaired Trainers in Texas the entire war. You did what was best for the War effort and it wasn't always what you really wanted to do.
  5. Wonderful! I go along with LTC. West. But we all know that will not happen. Political Correctness Sucks big time.
  6. As a young Trooper in Vietnam I was told by an Old D-Day Paratrooper Sgt. "Do not do anything you would not want to tell your Grandma, and if you do, never admit to it". Sound advice. I'll bet none of them would have ever thought to tell their Grandmother what they had done.
  7. Agreed. Only Civil or Criminal Laws to be used in Court. Religious Law has it's place, but it is not the Law of the Land.
  8. I am a Vietnam Vet. Friends of mine my age that I went to High School with decided to take the chance and go to work rather than College. The money would help the Family. While our friends around us were losing their Deferments and getting Drafted, they were ignored by Selective Service. These guys were not 4F, they had in some cases played Varsity Sports. These were Hispanics from East Los Angeles. A group that was heavily drawn on from California. Why they were not called up no one knows; they were waiting. That Newt or anyone else never received a call is a puzzle, but they didn't. It was nothing they did or did not do. To me the Question is a "You Can't Win" question as in "Do You still beat your Wife". Not a question with a winning answer.
  9. OMG! Gun Nutty, excuse me. Failing to pay attention. Gun Nutty.
  10. Gunny Nutty. The only Left Hand Threaded Action I Know I have encountered is the Norweidgan Krag. Not that there are no others, that is all that I found.
  11. Mapp Gas and Low temp Silver Solder. Unless you are good at it, work on it when you feel like working on it or it will end up in the Dust Bin.
  12. Prison Time in Southern California and The San Fran. Bay area. A Pat on the Back in Central and Northern Cal. It all depends on the Local District Attorney. Yes, Oklahoma is OK.
  13. Yeah! And all I can afford is the "Helper" part of Hamburger Helper. They spread my wealth, such as it is.
  14. How "Old Days"? In the Kentucky Rifles they were cast of Brass. A pattern was carved of wood and sand cast. Then everything you didn't want was filed away. At the same time frame for working guns and "Poor Boys" they were fabricated from sheet Iron and Soldered together. Then of course the very High End firearms Bone or Horn was Bent and Carved. Those Items were soaked in Vinegar, but not too long mind you. So what do you want to accomplish and what would you like it to look like? When you decide, there is likely someone here who can help you. Nothing is too silly if it comes out looking like what you want. There might be easier ways if you put more thought into it, but it won't be silly.
  15. Happy New Year all. All of you Learn to Say "Gung Hay Fa Choi" We may have a Need for it. Cantonese for Happy New year. One more thing, Everyone wear your Seatbelts, It's going to be a Bumpy Year. Heres wishing a Good out come to this 2012. The Last thing, My former Illegal Maya Neighbor says the Calender restarts on Dec. 22 and is good for another 5,000 years. Sounds good to me.
  16. E.R. Shaw will sell barrels threaded for the Arisaka in 14 and 17 threads per inch. Left handed, I'm not sure about that. The biggest problem in my mind is all the cuts and Machine work that is needed to finish the job. I would rather fit a barrel to a Pre 64 Winchester or Springfield. The Japanese designed a Crude but Strong action. I have a couple of them waiting for me to punish myself when the time is right.
  17. How does this fit in with Junior ROTC. Well, JROTC is a class kids take that exposes them to what the Military is like. It is not the Military or a gateway to the Military. Some kids find that they don't like it. I encourage them NOT To Enlist. Special clothing required by their Religion, talk to the Mormons about that. As to the Muslims there is No special clothing by the Koran as I was told. The Koran says to Dress Modestly; and what is Modestly anyway. Modesty is defined by the Culture you live in. There are Sikhs in the "Corps", they opted for the Haircut and Shave. The other Branches when the Sikhs opt for the Turban and the Beard they opt for limiting their Opportunities in the Service of their Country. Anyway the ruling was for Junior ROTC, High School, not ROTC, the 2Lt. factory. Am I being PC? No, this old Platoon Sgt doesn't play that game. The Mission is first, but I can't do the Mission if my troops make mountains out of mole hills and can't cross those mountains until I show them they are really mole hills. In other words, find the problem and clear out the BS.
  18. Karl, First off I must tell you that the Japanese-American Soldiers were in the Pacific during WWII. Like the Navaho "Wind talkers" the "Nisei"(Japanese-Americans)were used in Secret. Just who do you think interpreted on the Spot? Who talked the Imperial Soldiers out of the caves? So much more is not known by the General Public. My Father drove a Landing Craft in the Pacific and shuttled them back and forth. Fight as a unit, no. Important work, you betcha. As for the Sikhs, I live in a part of Northern California that is home to many Sikhs. A finer group of Honorable People I have yet to meet. Honor, personal honor is a religious thing for the Sikhs. They have a long History of Loyalty to whom they serve Militatily. They are NOT Muslim, they are Sikhs from the Punjab in India. I see no reason why a Sikh in High School can not wear a Turban in Junior ROTC; they are kids. When an Adult Sikh Joins the Military he has to choose, will he wear his Turban and Beard and stand out, or will he cut his hair and shave and blend in and be Uniform. Once he decides he cannot change his mind. This only applys to those who were born Sikh, all other followers of the Sikh religion must cut their hair and shave. Now as for the Muslims, I cannot speak for them. In my 20 Plus years I knew, worked for, worked with, and had working for me, Palistinians,Pakistanis, Arabs. They were as good and as bad as any other group. Some were my friends and others are alive because I was Not allowed to kill them. Those who were "Sufi" were always reasonable. I am glad I don't have to decide.
  19. Even here in the "Peoples Paradise/Republic of Kalifornia" we have Livestock protection Laws. A couple of years ago a Yuppy was walking his Dog in Rural Sacramento County when it was shot by a Rancher more than a quarter mile from the nearest road and in the midst of his Cattle. The DA sided with the rancher and Local Lawyers would not take the case. The County and surrounding Counties have Leash laws as well as the State Livestock Protection Laws. I don't remember what Breed the dog was, but I remember it was a Hansome Breed; Pity People don't train their dogs to heel.
  20. You can buy a very nice from a place like Richards Micro fit, or if you are adventurous and some what safe with hand tools you can make your own. All you need is a spare stock; and it's ends can be chewed up so you could buy one almost for free. I have found a number of forums where people have modified their Mosins to their liking. Look up the Finnish Tkiv85 sniper rifle and the M28/76 rifle for more Ideas. My first time trying to send pix. Let's see what happens.
  21. An AR can be built that functions to an acceptable Military Accuracy from a box of parts and no more information than what you find on the Internet. For Tools you need at the least an AR Wrench, a small common screwdriver, an assortment of small punches, and a medium sized hammer. Nice to have, but not always needed is a bench vice, action blocks, and a Torque Wrench. Now for a Tack Driver you need all of the above and more detailed instructions. You will always need a little bit of Moly grease. To keep cost down do you really need a Free float barrel and a quad rail? You can change that over at another time. E. Stoner designed the AR platform to be worked on by your Common Soldier working as an Armorer, so it really is simple to assemble a good rifle. To get the best out of your AR you need a Good barrel and consistant ammo. When I held my Armorer MOS I could assemble a M16 from a box of Mil-spec parts and shoot an inch and a quarter groups at 100 meters using the Colt 3X scope and Ball ammo. That was with the Military Chrome lined barrel that is rumored to not be as accurate as the Chrome moly barrel. In the World of AR parts you get what you pay for; get the best you can afford without going crazy as you can pay too much.
  22. Can't help you there. I have a Non-Factory, Winchester Pre 64 Feather weight contour Barrel. I'd like to find an action to match. Sorry!
  23. You don't find them to often but the Mexican Model 1910 is a Small Ring Small shank and the same hole spacing as the Pre98 actions. The Turk Model 1903 is a Large ring Small shank and Intermediate hole spacing as the Mexican 1910 and the Belgian and Yugo Model 24's. Confused yet? Like the man said "A picture helps a lot". Lacking pictures, everything stamped on it at the factory helps.
  24. Big around and Heavy has worked for Centuries.
