  1. what do you guys think of the 6.5x55 sweede? how does it perform? how does it stack up to the .260? thanks
  2. i hear some people say that all you need to make a "TWEED" is to take the barrel off of my turk (chamberes in 8x57) and replace it with a 6.5 sweede barrel. is this all that is needed???? i know that i will have to headpsace of corse, but is that it?
  3. i was thinking about that very idea myself. the only other thing i could think of would be a piece of velcro under the upper piece. i know it sonds kinda chinee though.
  4. !?! okay, okay, i can admit when ive goofed, and i did. i was throwing around the idea of buying a new stock for my turk mauser rebuild. but, after thinking, and a couple gentlemen givin me a "BRILLIANT IDEA"... i decided to use the military stock instead. figured if i messed up, the gun only cost 35$, so no big deal. so... i wanted to x-ney the top wood piece that goes around the rear sight, so.. i took it off. i then held the stock in all the shooting positions to see where i wanted to shorten it to. i made my desision and cut the bottom stock piece just the opposite side of the barrel strap.(closer to twoard the shooter) ya know, the one that holds the upper piece of wood on also. well, after lookin at it, i placed the upper piece back on the rifle and.... wow, that looks kinda cool. it completly covers the step in the barrel, and looks really neat. just one problem...(and i know some of you already know what comin ) how to hold the top piece on the gun?????????? this.... the question i cant seem to figure out. i need your guys help for this one. any suggestions on how to hold the top piece of wood on?? sorry, i dropped my wifes camera (another reason for the budjet build) so i have no pic's right now. thank you for all the help, brian
  5. NEW QUESTION.................................... i was found some BONDO-GLASS at meijers, so i picked it up to do my military stock re-make. i was wondering though, if i cut some of the wood out of the stock in the butt, basically like making a skeletonized stock, bondo glass up a nice check comb, and then wrap the hole thing in a layer of fiberglass, would the stock collaps under recoil? i am not going to be using any magnum calibers on it for any builds. its going to stay the current 8x57 for now. and maybe 338 federal later on. i just dont want to have the stock collaps when in use. reason for doing it...... to lighten the stock before adding weight with the bondo. thanks guys, brian
  6. that thing looks awsome..... great job. i think that you should do a sticky on "how to" for the rest of use guys. thanks, brian
  7. thanks a lot guys for the info. anyone out there have pics of sporterised military stocks? just looking for ideas. the stocks a pretty cluby lookin. thanks guys, brian
  8. how do you get the cosmoline out of the mood of a military stcok so that i could get bondo and paint to stick to it?
  9. i cant seem to find any info on the 8mm-06 round. i would like to know how it stacks up to handloaded 8x57 rounds? i am just wanting to see if it would be better to leave my barrrel as 8 mauser, or chamber it to 8mm-06. i will be handloading most of the time. so this is why i gave the 8mm-06 a look. i can see though that the 8x57 would be a bit better if i were to every be in need of more ammo. thanks guys, brian.
  10. i was going to work my first stock, and i figured that i would use my military stock to start with. its a 1940 k. kale mauser. i would like to bring the check rest (comb) of the stock a little higher, add a rcoil pad, and cut and work the front arm of the stock. i have heard of people using bondo to add to a stock. how is this done to make the bondo not come off during recoil? my thoughts were to drill holes into the stock to let the bondo sink into. then, i would shape the stock to how i want it and then add a layer or two of fiberglass over the whole stock. does this sound like it would work? will it add a lot of wheight to the stock? is there a better way? i am using the origonal stock for two reasons. i already have it, and i dont want to mess up a good stock. thanks for your input, brian
  11. i live on Mchenry county, illinois 'bout 80 miles west of chicago. WHY?
  12. i was just wanting to know if it were a yeah!! or a nayh!! on the advanced technology stock. any likes? dislikes? i couldnt figure out how to post the picture but it can be found at this site: http://www.tjgeneralstore.com/advanced_tec...ifle_stocks.htm then scroll down about 1/3 the page. thanks guys, brian
  13. whats all involved in rethreading a rem 700 barrel, (i.e- do you have to remove the cone shape that aids in loading that i believe 700 barrels have?) and wheres a good place to get the used barrels? thanks, brian
  14. would you be willing to sell it to me?
  15. i was looking at my turk mauser and seen that it is a k. kale mauser. i have heard of this being soemthing special? whats the big deal? is it something that shouldnt be tampered with? thanks guys, brian
  16. yah know.... i have been going back and forth on weather to go with a new barrel, or just kinda work the old one for now. it would keep the price down. I DONT KNOWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWWW i am looking at some sites on the net and see a couple of people say that handloading the 8x57 can really bring up the performance of the round. how would this compare to going up to 8mm-06? if i go to 8mm-06, all i need is a reamer right?(and headspace gauge) would i be able to hand ream the existing barrel to 8mm-06, or would i have to break it down amd use a machine? if i can leave it, that would be awsome, cause i dont have all the tools yet. (havent made a barrel wrench yet) i think if i go this route, i can get some more experiance, spend less money, and still get a good performing rifle. then, when i shoot out the origonal barrel, i can re-barrel to the 338-06. or another round. i would like to cut off the front sight, grind off the rear, and take the steps out of the origonal barrel. then re-crown. what is a good overall lenght for the 8x57, and the 8mm-06? i am wanting a hunting rifle, but i want the max performacne i can ge out of it. i dont mind heavy, or long. right now, with factory ammo, remington 200grn soft points, i can hit 6" drywall cut outs(from can lights) at around 60-75 yards standing. one fell over, and call it luck if you want, but i pointed, shot, and split one in half. i am no sharpshooter, but i can shoot a little. but i thik that the origonal barrel is in really good shape. another reason for my indesisevness. thanks guys, brian
  17. what would you recommend as a twist for the larger grn bullets? (250 through 300 grnbullets?) i am wanting to use the heavier bullets because i am building a 7 mm rem mag that will shoot up to 175 grn. bullets. is there a magical twist that will shoot all the 338 bullets? i am thinking.......1/10??? edit: ??questions?? 1. do you have to lengthen the mag well to get the 338-06 to fit? 2. anyone have any pics of different types of aftermarket stocks for mausers? i like the fajen mauser stock with the vented front stock, but i was wanting to know of any others out there. anyone have the fajen stock?? pics?? thanks , brian
  18. i was looking to turn my turk mauser in to a big pill pushing rifle. i was just wanting to know what you guys think of this round. i also wanted to know if you guys would think that an ackley version of thias round might be better. also looking for some feedback from people, hunters and target shooters that have used this round. thanks guys, brian
