    H&r Mauser

My father-in-law has one in .243. He's a pastor and one of the church members gave it to him. It's an FN action and I don't think he's ever fired it. I'd certainly like to get my hands on it. Not that I need it or anything...
  2. I took that upgrade offer over a year ago and I don't remember anything about insurance at all. 'Course if could have slipped my mind. If I'm not mistaken there is about $300 or so included with your membership. You can buy more through their program. I have actually done that to cover the excess value that my homeowners policy won't cover. You can usually only extend your Homeowners so far and that's probably the cheapest way to go. I use the NRA's plan for the balance.
  3. My Dad tried the gun shop thing back in the '70's out of frustration with his new boss, the owner's son-in-law. I don't think he ever made a single dime at it. He eventually quit both to start his new company in the trade he knew so well (electrical contracting). I followed him into that over 30 years ago and I can tell you being in business for oneself isn't a piece of cake, either. Sounds like you're frustrated and looking for a change. That's perfectly OK. I would personally look at doing something for yourself in the trade you already know if possible.
  4. Thanks, Rebel, I'll check it out.
  5. A couple of years ago I bought a Colt Frontier Scout .22 pistol in the original (numbered) box with all the original accessories and paperwork. It's not a re-finish and doesn't appear to have ever been turned, much less fired. Here's the kicker: It is a .22 LR/.22WMR convertible. The magnum cylinder in the box looks like crap. I'm certain it's not original to this gun. It's even nickel plated My question to you guys is how do I go about removing the old flaking nickel so I can polish/blue this extra cylinder? I'll never install it in the gun so I don't care whether it even fits or not. It would just look better in the box, for whatever that's worth. Besides, I need a small, inexpensive project since I'm almost through "freshening" up a Mauser project I built in '05. (I'll get a few pics once everything s re-assembled.) What's the best way to remove the old nickel plating?
  6. Agreed! I'll show your comment to the "Commander-in-Chief". Actually, I have a great wife. She doesn't really care too much what I do (gun-wise, that is) as long as everything else is covered. She just got her CC permit and carries a Kel-Tec PF9. Pretty cool gal! Thanks, Don. Good information to have.
  7. Thanks guys. I already have a 7X57 that I built on a Polish LR '98 4 years ago. In fact, I'm freshening up the checkering and stock finish as a winter project over the next few days or weeks as time permits. I'll try to post a couple of pictures when it's finished. I certainly don't need another rifle (I have 5 centerfire already) but you know how it is! Just curious; how can you tell the difference in this one and a 1936 just by looking? I plan to go to the Winston-Salem gun show next weekend. You never can tell what will turn up. I've watched a lot of your comments about the 6.5X55 over the last year or two. Never had one so I'll sure give that suggestion some thought.
  8. [atta chment=1108:mex_mauser_bottom.JPG]OK, here it is if I can figure out how to get the pictures in. Definitely a small ring. Just under the wood line above the recoil lug it is stamped CAL ST ALB VT. Left side, same location PV with a proof mark that looks like a "sun" or maybe a bomb. Crest is almost gone but here is what I can see: MEXICO (bottom of the circle) FABRICA NACIONAL DE (left side and top of arc). That's all I can make out. Bolt is not numbered to the action. Very light pitting overall but I believe it will polish out w/o a lot of trouble. Machined non-hinged bottom metal. What do I have here? I paid $65 a couple of years ago exactly as you see it. I'm thinking maybe .257 Roberts. May be another year or two before I get around to the project anyway. Thanks.
  9. Great job! I'd be proud to have it in my safe. Your son will really treasure that in years to come. Fun ain't it?
  10. I have one of these, at least I think that's what it is. I'll try to get a picture or two in the next few days. Since I'm certainly no expert, maybe you guys can help me determine exactly what it is. I'd like suggestions for suitable calibers, etc. Picked it up at a show a couple of years ago, action only for $65. Some light pitting but I believe it will polish out fine once I get around to starting on it.
  11. I have a '97 Honda 400 that has the original color wheels. I bought it new. You're correct. I'm 99.9 % sure they should be a light, not quite silver, gray. It does appear metallic. We used to have an older Honda 300 like yours that also had the gray painted wheels. My wife has a Yamaha now that uses a darker charcoal gray wheel. That's not what you want. Sounds like an interesting project. Best of luck.
  12. Yeah. Pictures please. I've always wanted to build one of those but never took the time.
  13. My wife surprised me with a certificate for a 4-day trip to Front Sight in Las Vegas. The package included a new Springfield Armory XD40! What a gal!
  14. These people are great. I've ordered lots of stuff from them. I have everything they offer for all the items in my "collection". You won't be disappointed.
  15. Congratulations! You'll like our part of the country. By mid-October it's beginning to cool off enough to be nice. I'm about 2 hours North of Charlotte. Enjoy your trip! That's a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity.
  16. I, too, tried what you're doing with little success even though I spent several years and several thousand dollars on education. Here is hands down the best book I've ever seen on the subject. Rule #1 by Phil Town. Check it out. It's worth your time. Promise.
  17. 28 years Saturday (12th). Boy, am I lucky or what?! Just got back from the florist ordering a dozen long-stem roses.

They did a 98 for me a couple of years back. The work is beautiful and I thought was reasonably priced. It took about twice as long as they they first told me, though. Also, it was an ordeal to actually get a live person on the phone. Other than those inconveniences, which may be better now, I think you'll be happy.
  19. Check out Worden Brothers. They used to have a program called TC2000 that was very good and not very expensive. I haven't traded in a while so I'm not sure what they are offering now. Watching you is getting me riled up to get back into it again, though.
  20. Check out Congressman Linder's and Neal Boortz's book on the Fair Tax. It just came out in soft cover. You can find it at Amazon.com. I have the hardback copy and it makes a lot of sense. I understand they've added a chapter or two to clarify things even further. It would force these "illegal immigrants" and even foreign tourists to share the burden because everyone would pay taxes when they spend money, not when they earn it. Check it out. I promise it's a good read. We can even have a good discussion here if we want.
  21. If you're using Scottrade you have a pretty fair amount of "tools" to use, for example: charts, quotes, earnings data and the like. Breaking news is either a killer or a gold mine! Briefing.com is good for news. You just probably need to delve into it to learn where everything is and how to interpret it. The best online broker I've found (and I still use them) is OptionsXpress. They have slightly higher commissions but I know a lot of professional traders who use them. You tend to get faster and better "fills" and the research is second to none. They also offer futures if you're interested but that's a whole other animal completely. Good luck! I'm glad to hear you're doing OK. Caution and patience are key in this game.
  22. EPS is "earnings per share". Another word of advice...never place "market" orders to buy or sell. That gives the specialists all the leeway they need to fill your order at the price most beneficial to them, not you. Instead place limit orders which specify the price you're willing to pay (if buying) or accept (if selling). Any broker can do it, even the online ones.
  23. Yeah, me too! I stopped at a local country store for a soft drink about 3 weeks ago. There was no one else around and the owner offered me a 99.9% MAK-90 at a fair price. No, it's not hot or anything. The guy was selling off a few personal guns and he's perfectly legit. I have been toying with the idea of having an "assault rifle" for quite awhile if no other reason than it's what the "anti's" always pick on. So this one followed me home and now I GET to feed it! Nobody locally has any ammo so I ordered from Sportsman's Guide. They didn't have any cheap stuff either but they accepted the order as a backorder. A couple of days later I stopped into a gun shop looking for ammo and found a Colt Frontier Scout .22/.22WMR unfired in the box w/ all the papers. Guess what? Another one followed me home. I'll have to stop looking for awhile, now. The kitty's depleted. So, yeah, I feel your "pain"! BTW, the guy who sold me the MAK said to check out Classicarms.com. I did and ya'll might enjoy it too. Lots of cool stuff and even some good jokes.

    Day Trading

Be careful! Why not "paper trade" for awhile before putting your green money into something. It is fascinating how the market works. I spent 4 years and several thousand dollars on seminars, educational books, software, travel and everything in between trying to get the hang of trading but never could make any money at it. I would lose some and make it back OR I'd make some and give it back. Really the only money I wasted was the educational part. But then again I still have the knowledge so maybe it wasn't wasted at all. But for what it's worth, I'm not trading at all now. This isn't meant to discourage you by any means! I wish you well but do be careful. You MUST be very disciplined at cutting your losses when a trade begins to go south, or sometimes north if you're into options. Keep us posted.
