  1. sweet looking gun. Your all set up, bi-pod and everything. Need to get my sweed started. What type of base/rings combo did you use?

    Brenden

It is talley lw ring and base in one deal, its just a bit low to use my Ziess Conquest 3x9 scope so I had to borrow a VX-III from a friend for the year.

  2. I recieved the final package today from z1r, and it is complete all that is left is to go and sight it in tomorrow, and shoot a deer this weekend. The gun is 1936 Mauser 98 small ring action, a number 3 contour shilen barrel 6.5x55 Sweede, satterlee arms 3 position safety, military bottom metal, and a stock from one of z1r's dealers.

Chambering, truing, drilling and tapping, new bolt handle, inletting of stock was completed by z1r. Gun was blued by Mark Waldo, and stock finishing was done by me.

This is my first custom rifle and I couldn't be happier with the way it turned out. We had a few bumps in the road, but z1r was great to work with, I would highly recomend z1r to anyone. Without further yaking, here are some pictures.

  3. Tom F, I would recommend z1r for your project, he currently is working on one for me and he has been great to work with. He is building me a 6.5x55 sweede on a small ring Mexican 98. He has a thread on most of the work he has done on this site if you want to see what he has done.

  4. I do not have use for the magnums, though it would be nice to own one. I've always wanted a .338. However, I've been considering the .25-06, the 6.5x55 Swede, as well as the .270. One concern is with feed issues. I thought the .270 would be less on a feed issue or are all three calibers close enough in length as not not pose a feed problem? I've read alot on the forums about the potential of the 6.5x55 Swede, mild recoil - very close to the the .270 and is what I was considering as the caliber of choice.

I have decided to have a gunsmith do the rebarreling, hot blueing, and drill and tap for a scope rather than trying to take on the job myself. By the time I purchase all the tools/equipment required to do the job properly I can pay to have a professional job done. $200 for the rebarreling, $200 for the hot blueing, and $85 for the drill and tap for scope mounts. When all is said and done with this project I know I could purchase a new rifle for about what this is going to cost me, but I have the desire to finish the K98.

I ended up at the same place as you 6 months ago. The guys on this site helped me reach the conclusion that is cheaper, safer, and Ill end up with alot nicer end result if I let someone that knows how to do it build the gun for me. z1r is building me a 6.5x55 sweede right now, this gun is going to be my go to gun light recoil and excellent ballistics.

  5. That's whatthe owner wants to know too, lol. I am working on the pattern stock. That's all that really remains. Only the owner is trying to convince me to install irons on it after he refused my early attempts to install them. My concern is that they'll look like an after thought now, which is exactly what they'd be.

LOL......customers can sure be pests.... :P This is one I hope you post pics of when you get it completed, I really like the octagon barrel look.

  6. I currently have a 6.5 x55 being built on a small ring 98 Mex. By Z1r. I am starting to think about the reloading for this gun and am wondering what kind of pressure I should be looking at. I read to not load the maximum in the older actions..not sure if that is true now that it is a rebuild and has been heat treated. Thanks for the info guys.

  7. Mike I really like that side rail, that is something I would have never even considered or noticed had you not pointed it out, sure makes a big difference when you see it sitting next to one that isn't done.

  8. What it is a Hungarian Huzagol 43M. Which is a copy of the German G98/40 which was derived friom the Hungarian Huzagol 35M. Essentially a Mannlicher with mauser bottom metal. Kaliber 8x57 unlike the 35M which was 8x56R.

Interesting to note that these had two piece stocks like a smle. I'd like to see how the one piece stock was dealt with.

Ok.......z you are just showing off now :P , but I looked again and the shroud is different on the Mannlicher damn close to the same though. Neat looking rifle none the less

  9. Boy I am not sure what it is, but I just looked at a picture in one of my gunsmitthing books and that rifle looks exactly like one of the scout rifle projects he was working on. If no one knows for sure I will look when I go home for lunch.
