  2. I talked to him yesterday. Rod will be in for a while longer. He is doing better and sounds strong. Yes, it is heart/pulmonary related but other than that I am not sure. I will keep you posted. Sharon Regional Hospital Sharon PA. rm. 551
  3. Our friend Rod, (Tanglewood) is in the hospital. I don't have any details except that he was taken in late last night. Please join me in praying for a quick recovery. Thanks............ John
  4. I have to agree with Don. I have done a .308 on a VZ with no modification. It fed just fine. I also did a .243 using a .308 isreali converted guard assy. It had a 3/16" spacer, spot welded and notched to the front of the mag well. They both fed just great. I probabily wouldn't use the spacer if I did another. Then again, it didn't hurt anything either.
  5. JMHO - Anyone who chooses to access this board can read these posts. As far as by and for the members, all these posts are like preaching to the choir. I don't necessarily disagree but. . . I have taught Hunter/Trapper Education for years. I am also a NRA Rifle, Pistol and Shotgun Instructor who actively teaches in the area. As important as the material and skills to be taught it is just as important to portray ourselves as sportsman. We sell our passion! We teach "ethical harvesting" of game animals in a safe, humane manor using terms like field dressing, ethical, shotgun, rifle, firearm, harvesting etc. We stress safe firearm handling, safe firearm storage and marksmanship. We are very careful about how we refer to our tools and their use. Why? Because it is important to portray what we do and how we do it in a manor that does not make us look like some nutcase bloodthirsty kooks to those who do not share our passion for firearms and the shooting sports. What we post and how we post is not us good old boys sitting around talking over a few beers. It's out there for all to see. I want more people liking what I like and liking what I do. Not the other way around. Convert the masses instead of scarring them away! Sell your passion. When you stuff it down people's throat, they just throw up! Just for the record. . . . I love the AR platform. It is a fine firearm. I own them and many other types as well. No I don't want anyone to infringe upon my right to own and use them.
  6. I thought this board was about Military Firearms Sporterizing and Restoration.
  7. Welcome back! Glad to see another W-PA "mauser maniac"!
  8. Unscented baby wipes and body wash will be very well appreciated as well.
  9. Dr, Really - you are doing fine! You might have a few issues to still work out but I'll bet money that your rifle will not "shoot like a shotgun"! You have built a fine mauser sporter rifle. If you now have been bitten by the bug, it will be the first of many! Maybe your next one will be a tack driving long range varminter. Have at it and have fun doing it! John
  10. Hi there, IMHO . . . looking at that target, I think you may need to retighten your rings and mounts. After checking the screws, I would definitly shoot in that barrel from sand bags or lead-sled, nice and slow. Most bbl mfgs recomend a break-in procedure in which cleaning between shots is common thus you are shooting an unfowled barrel and also allowing time for the barrel to cool. Compaired to a Hart or Shilen etc, A&B bores are rougher than premium barrels and will pick up a lot of copper fowling for quite some time. That added friction also adds to the heating problem. Barrel heat WILL cause a plastic stock to warp and may very well press against the barrel and cause your shot string to walk. *Ramline stocks may not the greatest and maybe neither are A&B barrels but they don't shoot that bad either. You have a very nice looking sporter rifle that should be capable of shooting 1 inch groups and that ain't bad by a long shot. We should shoot so good when we are 100 years old! If you are trying for benchrest accuracy, well that is another story.
  11. Well, It's now July 16th and no further word on the status of the co-op. Rod, my stuff is on the way!
  12. Hi Guys, Please let me throw my two cents into the pot. I have not participated in the co-op but have been planning to send in guages and reamers. The only reason for not doing it yet was there were a few board members who wanted to use them first. Anyway, I think that the co-op is a great idea and should be kept. I personally think that "Tanglewood" Rod would be an excellent choice to take over for Mike. He is a long time member who knows these guns inside and out, he is experienced and knows what he is looking at and is current. He also wants to do the job. No offense to anyone. This is not a trust issue. Lets face it, there are some builders that are really up on things and have an understanding of machine tooling that most of us will never know. Taking advantage of this experience is a no-brainer IMHO. Best of wishes to all. John
  13. Hi there, and welcome! A-men to getting Jerry K's mauser shop manual. If you can think it, someone on this board has probibly done it at least once. LOL Check out the archival here titled actions to give you a starting point for food for thought. Samco Global out of Miami has some great 24/47 Yugo barreled actions that look absolutely unissued! Might be a good starter. Also if you google "Curio and Relic" dealers you will have a nice list of places to check out for milsurp rifles and parts. Good luck not getting bit by the Mauser Bug!
  14. Hi ya Tinker, it's been a while for both of us. Nice buck! Now that the season is winding down, (flintlock) I'll be gettiing back to it. Will be nice to talk with you guys again.
  15. Hey Rodney. Happy Belated Birthday. I'm sorry that I havent got that out sooner but things are things. I just want you to know that we think about you often and really hope you had a fantastic day (or more)LOL dogz no more John
  16. Very Nice! I'm jelous. You did a lot of planning on this one. It shows. 7 mag is a favorite of mine. It's a great cal. I'm interested in how your trigger breaks and what your final let off ended up. I have a pile of military triggers and would appreciate any advise which you might forward. Again, a beautiful rifle! -dogz-

Again, they are real works of art. CAn't wait to get started. I'll be getting the book. I have bost of the tools already. I just hope that I have enough talent to do an OK job and not get too disapointed in my first try! Patience was something I have always struggled with! (LOL)

All 4 are just absolutly awesome! You are a true artisan. Yes, I would love to learn. Any suggestions as to getting started?
  19. You know that I can't read yur posts. . . . . I just can't see past all that jiggling
  20. Hey Brendan, Looking good . . . . looking real good! Now don't do what I did and get impatient! Your mentor will be real proud! The hourglass trigger guard is a nice touch. Did you thin it out any or leave it the stock thickness?
  21. Put me in for one also. I'll try anything once - twice if I like it!
  22. I have parkerized a few. Do not park the chamber or bore! For a rifle, I would not park the receiver and barrel seperately. Do the barreled receiver with the ends plugged. They actually have rubber plugs for both ends. As far as the tank is concerned, 30 is probably a little short for rifle work unless all your barrels are in the 22" range. LOL Brownell's sells a full length ( 40" I think) stainless tank for $150. If you know a tin knocker, I'm sure he could make what you want for about $50. That's what I did. If you are doing pistols and the such, I have found tons of old steam table trays at the local auction. can be picked up for a song. Your tanks don't have to be boiler plate either. You will be working at temps less than 200 degrees f. Hope this helps. -dogz-
  23. Hi Guys, Let me throw my $0.02 into the pot. I am a "Do it myself guy" and I'll try anything at least once. I am having fun building these rifles and I'm learning more each one I do. I have learned so much the posts on this board that I couldn't get from the books! One thing that is for sure, I have asked a lot of questions from the "Professional" and "non Pro" members and have never been blown off or made to feel small or dumb. That is how we learn. We don't get 40 years of experience in one bolt handle job. Some have the expertise, some have the equipment and some just have the desire to aspire! Learn what you can, keep what's important, leave behind what's not and move forward. It's not worth fightin over. I've made a few wonderful friends from this board. That's worth keeping too!
  24. I'll bet that it's gonna be sweet! Nice action for a 308. Maybe you'll have it done and you can bring it when Rod has us all up for pig! By golly, I ain't gonna miss the next one. (Hint, Hint)
