  1. Great looking Mosin! That is in the "I wanna do one someday" category. It looks great and it is an awsome feeling to build your own. Plus he can tinker with this rifle for some time to come as the MN become more popular in the customizing circles. More goodies will be avialble as time goes on. Looking forward to your Mauser build story and pics.
  2. I have heard of people using JB Weld. I am considering using it to cold weld a flash hider in pace. Is silver solder the same stuff you use to sweat pipe for a washer? Can you get easily at the hardwre store?
  3. Not sure what I am going to do yet with the flash hider. I am looking into slleving the barrel and then tapping but not exactly sure how to do that. Cold weld??? On another note I received my two stocks. Started shaping one for training and ultimately use on the Carcano project. Only using hand tools as that is all I got for now and will also use to sharpen my laser engraving techniques. Any woodstock saping/inletting tips and tricks welcome. Doing this for first time from semishaped blank.
  4. 39 year old man enlist to make sure his family has health care. http://www.jsonline.com/news/wisconsin/64677772.html
  5. Wow, running towards you! That would have got my adrenaline pumping. Congrats. That is also on my bucket list. I've never seen a bear in the wild. I may be able to do it in Michigan one of these days.
  6. Semi Nut, Very nice looking bench. Mine is similar concept, but not near as organized. Good work.
  7. I am sure the vast majority of the police officers, in this country anyway, are "good" and try and do the right thing in often times very difficult situations. However, this is best summed as a classic "WTF!" situation. They definitely screwed up and got caught. They do not appear to be getting away with it at this time, and one hopes this is not systemmic in the Phoenix PD.
  8. I suppose it does not have to be rimless. I was just trying to match up the potential bolt dimensions to the the cartridge dimensions as close as possible to avoid any major rework to the bolt. I don't have direct access to machining equipment. I had pretty much decided on the .357 mag as the cartridge/caliber after doing my initial searching. I will research the .357 automag. That sounds interseting as well as the .375x38/40.
  9. Well I dug through some of my reloading manuals and it appears there really isn't a rimless cartridge in the 357 to 40 caliber range. I got my next summer/early fall project lined up... Or, ummm, planning on it anyway... I got to finish up the three I have before starting another one.
  10. .357-inch diameter or larger; have a minimum case length of 1.16 inches; and have a maximum case length of 1.625 inches. I have a short list of some, but I am looking specifically for a rimless case in the .357 to .40 caliber range. Anyone got any ideas of one that is not on the list. .357 Magnum .38-40 Winchester .41 Magnum .41 Special .44 Magnum .44 Special .44-40 Winchester .45 Colt .454 Casull .458 SOCOM .480 Ruger .475 Linebaugh .50 Action Express .500 S&W I am dreaming up a new project for next year maybe for a small ring mauser or Carcano for another Indiana legal deer rifle for next season.
  11. Well our deer hunting magic seems to be on hold. My oldest son and I hunted hard Saturday morning and evening, but no deer showed. Some squirrels and raccoons... He bailed on me on Sunday. I saw nothing Sunday except one lone turkey. His archery license is good all season. Maybe I can get him back out during the rut in November. Lots of standing corn in the midwest right now, and the deer are really scattered so we'll see.
  12. Ok, that makes sense and when you mentioned the seawater that kicked the brain cell awake and I remembered when I heard that. I was in the Navy and served on one of the first Steel hulled/Aluminium superstructer destroyers that was built in the late 50's early 60's. We had her in drydock in the late 80's and there was a lot of corrosion at the point of contact between the two different metals. It appeared in some places the paint was the only thing holding it together. Seawater was the key to that. Thanks for the feedback.
  13. Here is my question. I have heard that when you put two metals that are differnet into contact with one another they create a mild electric current and thus forms or accelerates oxidation. But I am not intending on running an electric current through my rifle anytime soon. Reason I am asking I was thinking of my "Carcano/Swede flash hider sleeved in a softer metal" project. After remembering hearing this at some point in the past I am not so sure that is a good idea. On another note has anyone noticed accelerated rusting where metal constantly contacts or has been repaired with epoxies such as JBweld? I have not used this stuff much so I am not sure of the long term effects of slathering epoxies on metal for bedding and such.
  14. That is awsome. Hunting with your kids is about as good as it gets in my book. Good luck with the rest of you hunting season. Darin
  15. Outstanding! You guys did very well. I have never hunted antelope, but they sure look like trophies to me. Hunting them looks and sounds like fun and they look tastey too! Are they a similar in taste as whitetail deer? Darin
  16. I think he has,. He has already stated what spot he wants for opening morning of firearms season in November. Some more good news. My oldest son must have been feeling a little left out and has asked me to take him bow hunting this Saturday... I have been after these guys for four years to hunt with me and they are finally doing it. I hope to have some more Father/Son shots this weekend, but this time with my oldest!
  17. In between deer hunting, and working on my Carcano project I have also been gaining more ground on the Laser Engraving. Learning the Corel software and limits of what this can do. So far I have stuck with getting a half way decent knot pattern (I know, get off the knots already) and trying to create just a "normal" chekering pattern for the forearm on a stock. Getting the checkering to look right has been more of a challenge since there are no bitmpas available that have the angles just right. I am having to draw them in the program from scratch. Talk about time consuming. Here is some more samples for your viewing pleasure. Darin
  18. Between deer hunting I have been chipping away at my Carcano project. I have completely stripped the blueing off of everything using Naval Jelly, stoned where I thought it needed it and polished to a 600 grit finish with backed sandpaper. I received the Sweded flash hider from Sarco yesterday and put it on for mockup. It is just a tad too large and fits over the barrel. Will figure out a way to afix. I am going to try and sleeve as was suggested. Here is a birds eye of the overall concept. I sitll have not received the new stock blank. First time I have had an issue getting what I have ordered. I thought the price was alittle low for a Claro Walnut stock... Oh well, chalk it up as another lesson. I will go into remediation with either Ebay or PayPal if it doesn't show up soon. I'll probably end up buying a shaped blank from boyds if that be the case. Darin
  19. Here is one that I didn't shoot, but I am really proud of. My youngest son decided to go hunting for the first time yesterday morning. He took out the 50 cal muzzie and we got a doe doing a ground stalk. Two deer in two weekends. This season is starting out very good! Thank you! :-)
  20. Wishing you better luck next hunt! Even though you didn't see one your one lucky human being in my book. To hunt in Alaska would be a once in a lifetime chance for alot of us.
  21. I went to Middle school, jr. High, and High School in Georgetown, Tx. HS was right off I35. Looked alot like that. Small world. All the Kickers in HS parked their duelies up on the hill above the parking lot. Ahhhh, good times.
  22. Note the efficiency! Everyone is Equal! Except of course the members of Congress who go gallavanting through at the tail end of the video!
  23. Walnut, You are correct. I will have a flash hider that needs to be threaded on the barrel. the barrel at this time has no threading at all. I do not have the flash hider yet (It is on order from Sarco) so I do not have a firm idea of what the inside diameter is on the hider. I was actually thinking of this. Plan A: If the hider is a lot larger than the OD on the barrel then I was going to sleeve in a much softer metal such as aluminium then secure the sleeve to the end of the barrel with a weld of some kind. I will robably finish the barrel and reciever in a black matte gunkote. I currently have everything stripped to bare metal. I will just need to do a real neat job. Plan B: I will thread the barrel and see if I can get a good seat. If not then weld in place to secure and revert to plan A.
  24. Great Job on the buck! Good lookin fella too. Feels good doesn't it! I get to try for two bucks this year so I will be back out October 1st. Can't wait. What did he dress out at? Estimated live weight? Man I know what it is to have a bad shot and lose a buck. Happened to me during 2007 season on a decent 6 pointer. I hit too far farward and high taking him right in the shoulder blade. Broke my arrow upon impact and he pulled the remaining 9 or so inches of arrow out with his teeth after running a 60 yard half circle. I watched him do it. My uncle and I spent several hours the next morning combing the woodlots and we kicked him up! He wasn't moving very fast for a deer, but he wasn't really hobbling. Decided to leave him be. I sure hope he survived that winter. Not a warm fuzzy feeling when you do something like that to such a magnificent animal. Brneden - Does are just as cagey if not more sometimes. A bow kill is never easy. I plan on taking my quota of antlerless tags this year for the freezer. Shooting for three. Good luck and hunt on.
