  1. Not really sure what to think about Ron Paul. He inspires strong emotions both ways, but as Spiris eloquently points out that should be our one and only goal. Obama must be a one term president.
  2. Talking about Hog Heaven... Great shooting and looking rifle! And you sent ole pork chop to heaven or where ever pigs go... Looking real good to me! Great Job on all accounts. Darin
  3. Remarkable job. Well done on the rifle and hunt. That is what it is all about. Good luck on your future hunts and rifle projects. Darin
  4. To specify I am going to file down the rim that rises up from the edge of the bolt face. I don't think I will need to actually remove material from the bolt face itself. As for the extractor, good point, I don't know yet what that will entail. I'll figure something out in time.
  5. I will have to re-acquire the guages. I was under the impression that with a rimmed cartridge you headspace using the cartridge rim thickness as a guide to perform any modifications to the bolt face/extractor. I could be wrong, but I think that is where my problem lies after a close examination/comparison of my two bolts last night. The Mag bolt has it's bolt face rim ground down more than the Max bolt. I am thinking this is why the Mag bolt locks up tight. I have fired the Mag rifle many times with no issues using several different types of ammo. The rim on the other bolt is still too high. I think it is contacting the barrel face not allowing it to lock fully. It still closes, but does not completely lock if that makes sense. At this point I don't think it is the ammo. It appears I have an excessive gap between the bolt face and the cartridge head. I may try grinding down the rim which may allow the bolt face to move closer to contact the head on the cartridge.
  6. Pics as promised. First shot Second shot Comparison of the two I pulled the 180 grains and replaced with a lighter 158 gr and it failed with a complete separation. After taking these pictures I started examing the bolt from my 357 mag carcano and noticed it locked into place in its rifle and in the max and would move very little once locked. I checked the bolt from the 357 max carcano and it does not feel like it is locking all the way in either rifle. So, I don't think the bolt is locking completely for whatever reason. That would explain the "extra room" in the chamber for the case to expand to a breaking point, and the puff back of gases. I don't want to give up on this project because the rifle handles very well and will be a nice knock around deer gun for next season, If I can get this problem resolved. Thanks in advance for you review and suggestions. Darin
  7. First shot seemed normal. Second shot felt like the rifle "jumped" almost out of the rest and I felt stinging/burning on my face. It was difficult ejecting spent case and when I did get it out it had ruputed just above the rim. I then inspected the first case and it too had an albiet much smaller fracture. This ammo was from Reeds Ammo (online) and should be new Rem. brass with a 180 gr Hornady XTP. I pulled a bullet from an unfired round and measured the gun powder. 18.9 gr of what looks like BLC2, but not sure. I am pulling a few more and reloading them with some speer 158 gr HP and some Herco or HP38 to see if this will resolve my issue. Not sure what is wrong, but that was a little disconcerting. Before I go shooting this again any comments or suggestions welcome. Darin
  8. Ouch, thats gotta hurt... Hope no one was injured. But I am ahead of you this year in car repairs. Two teenage sons and three car accidents. 1 was running into a concrete post so his fault. That ran about $3000 and to keep it off his record I ponied up the cash for that. Good bye workshop . The other two were other drivers running into him. That cost about $10,000 for both added together. The insurance company still jacked my rates. Can't win, but at least I'm having a gret year deer hunting .
  9. Youngest Brother came up from Texas and he wanted to do some deer hunting. This was his first time. I got this doe with a 44 mag rifle and he downed a buck with his 12 guage on a spot and stalk about three minutes apart in the late morning. We had sat in a tree stand most of the morning and saw nothing. We had fresh suateed tenderloin medallions, butter potatoes and toasted a great hunt with some local mead that night. What a day to remember. Cheers and Hope all is Well, Darin
  10. Does not get any better than that! A little huntress in the making. Your a very lucky man indeed. Yes, do tell about the other deer.
  11. Nothing wrong with that buck at all! Great job. Our firearms season opens Saturday. Will be out with family so hope we have a great day as well. Stay safe and good luck! Darin
  12. Tagged out on my buck this weekend. He field dressed out at 150lbs and would have been about 185 to 175 on the hoof. He had a wide 8 point rack, but busted off one side at some point and ended up with a rack and a half six point. It was a clean double lung shot at 15 yards. He had bedded down from me at 42 yards for about 2 and half hours. After he got up to work over some more saplings I called him the rest of the way in with a couple of buck grunts to seal the deal. Now onto some does during firearms and muzzleloader to restock the freezer and maybe even get some rabbit hunting in which I have not done in some time. Happy Hunting to All and Good Luck, Darin
  13. I have not done one in winter one. yet. Duracoat sells a winter camo kit. You might take a look at that to see if that is the direction you want to go. I am in the process of collecting materials to do a dedicated MN91/30 varmint rifle in a Boyds Thumbhole in Forest camo. Have the ATI reciever scope mount. It will be a while before I am ready to start working on that one, but will post some pics when I get started. I might buy the foprest camo kit from duracoat to finish the metal off or might try to be creative on my own. Don't know yet. Good luck and post some pics on progress. Darin
  14. Tell you what Ken next time we plan a trip I'll let you know when we will be out there. I don't think one more would crowd anyone too much.
  15. We stayed in Gettysburg, SD which was actually east of the Missouri. We drove 50 miles each way to and from the PD town each day. Anytime I shoot something and take its life I feel bad to a degree. That is normal and understable. Nature is beautiful, bountiful and cruel all at the same time. The way I look at it is we, as humans, have invariably altered the environment, not necissarily for the good nor bad, but altered it none the less. We have removed a large number of natural predators which was natures way of population control. We now have to perform the unpleasent task of keeping these critters in check. As for the critters bieng a detriment to the cattle I did not see any cows break their legs while we were out there. However, we did see two cattle skeletons in the PD town we were shooting on. How the cattle died is hard to say. Disease, coyotes or PD holes? Another positive thing is we also paid for a hunting license to the Sioux nation which is part of their economy not to mention the hotel, gas and the food we ate along the way helped pump money into the economies which helps people along the way. So all-in-all the death of a few bountiful critters did some good and we helped fill our role as an apex predator and had some fun and bonding time with family, which is what it is realy all about for me.
  16. Myself , my Dad, cousin and uncle went out to the Cheyanne River Souix Indian Reservation and did three days of shooting on a big prarie dog town. my first ever PD hunt and trip into the upper midwest. We had some cool and windy conditions to deal with the first two days and then a nice sunny day with little to no wind on the last day. I brought out my Green Meanie MN91/30 topped with a Weaver 6.5x20x44 scope. I also had a HR .223 single shot which I pillar and barrel bedded the forearm. I also added about 12 lbs of lead shot between the two rifles hollow synthetic stocks to get them as heavy as possible. I ordered a 440 round spam can of 70s Russion surplus 148 gr silver tip ammo and handloaded about 700 rounds of once fired .223 brass with sierra 55 and 63 gr bullets. We verfied ranges by first lasing the kill/closest mound from the bench and then when we broke to walk the town we lased back to the truck/table. I actually started with the Mosin due to the windy conditions. I scored one confirmed kill the first day at 410 yrds and had two confirmed kills the second. One at 515 yards and the other at 549 yrds. I went through about 220 rounds of 7.62x54R in 2 days. Since the wind laid down the third day we broke out the .17hmr and .22lr my Dad and uncle brought. I switched to my .223 later that day. I had several confirmed kills, but had two notable ones. I got one with a .22lr at 239 yards and my longest with .223 at 385 yrds. Before this trip I had never shot at anything beyond 300 yards. It took me a while to figure out how to adjust my scopes for the ever changing wind conditions, but once I got the hang of it I know I gave some of those prarie dogs a close shave a time or two. We had a blast! Throwing in a couple of pix. Now onto bow season which opens this Saturday!
  17. Great looking mount. looks very life like. They did a great job.
  18. I just sold off two of my 6.5 carcano actions. I have two left and am considering selling one more off. I am putting the money towards a new (hate to say it) rifle in .223 for an upcoming prarie dog hunt with my Dad in South Dakota. I just could not justify trying to build one out on a milsurp. I priced a single shot HR varmint rig with Nikon BM scope for under 550.00 delivered. Can't beat that. Another 200 hundred you can get it in a bolt action (Rem, Savage, Weatherby) guaranteed to shoot MOA or better right out of the box.
  19. Looking good. Wonder how it shoots when you get it all put together?
  20. Sorry to hear you lost your father. You and your family will be in our prayers. Darin
  21. About 11 miles east of Taylorsville. We had a great time and hope to go back next spring. Ooops I mean west of Taylorsville. Chestnut hunting Lodge.
  22. We did well. Our group of four shot five times and had four boars on the ground. The only one that had to shoot twice was the pistol hunter. I took mine at 60 yards with my MN 91/30 using a Speer 180gr rn loaded with 43gr of IMR4895. Perfect quartering away shot. Pretty much a bang, flop. My son used his a 1943 Lee enfield and hit in the neck/spin area at about 20 yards. He had a Sierra 150gr sp loaded with 41 gr of Varget. That boar didn't move an inch after the shot. My nephew took his at about the same distance as my son with my BCD43 German mauser using a Nosler 200gr sp loaded with 43gr of IMR4895. The boar more or less took a step or two and then fell over. The last boar was taken with a 44 mag pistol at about 30 yards. He was using some of my 44 mag loads. Hornady 240gr XTP loded with 11.5gr of Herco. We recoverd one of the 44 mag bullets. It expanded very nicely. It looked like a someone had started to peel a banana. We had a lot of fun running up and down the mountain. We did have a couple of guides and used bay dogs to find the boars. First time I have ever hunted with guids or dogs. Glad we did cause these things get into the thickest stuff and disappear. Would have been a different story without them. This was typical of the terrain. My son with his boar and Enfield. Our haul.
  23. Looks like it is time to write my congressman. I believe Crown Point is in my district as well. I just don't get it. How can people be "happy" about this. Don't they realize now the government can write kangaroo laws or an issue an "emergency decree" making what used to be a lawful activity illeagal thus creating a "criminal". Then bust in your home and haul you away. Sieze your property and sell it to fill their pockets, and all in the name of the State. Now it is perfectly legal like. More is stolen with the pen than at the point of a gun. Didn't we, as Americans start a revolution 200 years or so ago over this very type of abusive activity? How can this be a good thing on any level?
  24. Mitch Daniel if he decides to run. He could be a strong runner. Maybe a strong female conservative VP? Bottom line is if the economy still sucks in 2012 Obama loses. Case in point. Greorge Bush Sr. presided over one of the most lop sided military victories in modern history, had some of the highest approval ratings in history shortly afterwards and then several months later lost to Clinton due to a crappy economy. Americans do not tolerate a bad economy. Even if the the economy has nothing to do with the president for the most part.
