  1. It's a start. (Hopefully) Not saying that the other side of the coin hasn't dipped their grubby mitts in the taxpayers cookie jar. They are just as much to blame for the ballooning budget (what a joke) and deficit (wish it was a joke). The only thing I can say is our grandkids and great-grandkids and beyond will have every right to hate us for indenturing them to the gubmint before they are even born unless we get this under control.
  2. Yup. Agree 100%. Obamanomics, aka Socialism, does not do squat but enslave the ignorant. The man is only compromising now because he got creamed in the mid terms. Private individuals taking finanacial risks "with ther own money" creates wealth and thus creates jobs. Not the "What's mine is mine and what's yours is mine" government.
  3. Awsome! Way to stick it out and great shot. So what is your first kill tradition? Ours is taking the tenderloins out, butterfly cut them and sauteeing in olive oil and fresh mushrooms with a bottle of wine or mead for that nights dinner to toast the hunt and the bounty. I and my son will be out Saturday in some cold and snowy stuff (forecast anyway). My wife made mention she wanted to come along. She will not hunt, but she said she would bring along a book for the sitting part... We will see. Anyway CONGRATS!
  4. Nice looking songdog. Good looking rifle too.
  5. The bullet went right through the doe I brought down. Small hole in and small hole out. Shot was at 20 yards or so. I did not dig much deeper than that.
  6. Outstanding! Good looking buck. I am still out there myself. Good luck on your doe tag.
  7. I am using the Hornady 140 gr leverrevolution bullets. Basically a hollow point with a polymer tip in the hollowed end. It was supposed to aid in expansion, but from the way the deer reacted to the shot I think I put it clean through her without any expansion. Not enough velocity? I will never know. I am open to trying out anything that will put a deer down quickly. The lead shou expand well and penetrate.
  8. Anyone ever re-barrel an SKS into a different caliber? Say 358 Gremlin or 223. I got a seed of an idea as I found a sub 200 dollar SKS just don't know if I'd be wasting my time. Darin
  9. It is the same rifle I finished up in September. http://www.sporterizing.com/index.php?showtopic=8264 Just a note. It has now been out in rain and sleet and the finish has held up really well both wood and metal. I am happy with the minwax and duracoat products.
  10. Good post. Unfortunately I don't know of anything right off hand. It would seem to me any mods would need to be done on a very personalized basis since the nature of the injury would dictate the mods required. Is he making a concerted effort to use his left side? Maybe a left handed orientated bolt action? Or even a break action single shot for simplicity set up for a new lefty? This is a tough one.
  11. 357 mag. I think it is a tad too light/small for deer. The doe I lost on Sunday was a solid center body mass shot. I typically would have had no problems with a shotgun or 50 cal muzzleloader recovering a deer with that shot. I decided to go for a head shot the second time to ensure a clean miss or a down deer. I hate leaving a wounded animal. My son still wants to try it on a buck. I am going to try and coach him for a bow style shot in the heart and/or lungs. I think that is the only way you can actually have an easy recovery with a 357 mag on deer... My opinion based on observations anyway. My next years deer gun is going to be a 357 max and should pack more of a wallop.
  12. It finally managed to bring one down this morning. Shot in the neck at about 20 yards. A small, but tender and tastey doe. I connected Sunday morning, but was unable to recover that doe. It looked like a good shot. Saw the impact through scope at 50 yards. The doe ran, then stopped to look back and then trotted off. I trailed it, but very little bood and lost sign after 150 yards or so. Spent three hours looking. My youngest still is gunning for his buck so we will probably be out next weekend. He still wants to use the 357 so hope to get a pic or two up for review.
  13. Awsome. Always feels good when you put one down.
  14. Outstanding. Wish my wife would take more of an interest. Then again maybe not!
  15. Arrowed this buck yesterday evening. Nice 8 pointer. Clean heart shot at 15 yards. Deer went maybe 40 yards stopped, wobbled and dropped. Field dressed out at 180 lbs at the check in station with estimated live wieght of 215 to 230 lbs. A lot of fat reserves still in buck, but the neck was just beginning to swell so the rut is on in Northern Indiana. This was the third buck I had shot this season, but the first I have managed to bring down and recover. Shot a doe two weekeneds ago and did not recover her either. It had been a pretty rough bow season until now. Got two weeks til gun opener. Hope to post a few more picks of tastey deer brought down with some old rifles! Good luck to all, Darin
  16. Good luck on your Elk. I hope to go for the first time next September. Darin
  17. Pictures now included! 30-06: Still need to find a barrel. Will want it to be 20 to 21". Going to add a extended mag release. Will be sandblasted and parked. Color suggestions? Stainless Steel, Matte Black, Sniper Green, or a Rose Color perhaps to go along with the Black Cherry stock? Help me out. Scope to fit the older bueler rings. 7mm Mauser: Going to add a Gibbs detachable mag and extend the mag release. Still need to get a low swing saftey and have the bolt turned down. Color suggestions. Matte Black or Matte Brown. Dunno Stainless maybe? Maybe two tone color scheme. SS and GunBlue???? Tasco Low scope rings and suitable 4x32 scope. 357 MAX: The stock is going to get painted. It has been repaired and has hairline cracks. So I was going to epoxy to stabilize the wood and then Coat in a High quality epoxy based paint. I am thinking Fall Forest Camo, but hey I am open to suggestions here. If I can get the bolt handle turnded down and swept for scope I am thinking of going with a cantilevered mount similar to the ATI MN mount and use a regular scope in 4x32 instead of a LER style. Thanks for the input guys!
  18. I have almost 90% of the parts that are needed for my next three projects. Hope to have them finished by upcoming Summer 2011. 1908 Brazilian mauser. Easiest one. Just rebarreling in original caliber with new A and B F34 barrel. Using a Boyds walnut stock and timney trigger. Will t and d for scope mount. Parked and Duracoated a color that is yet TBD. May add a 3 round detachable magazine. BCD43 German Mauser. Was already sportered at one time into a 8mm-06. Will clean up and put on a A and B F34 30-06 barrel. I am hand carving a black cherry thumbhole mannlicher style stock that will be trimed in Franch Claro Walnut. It is already t and d for a buehler scope mount. It will have a fixed 4x32 non belled scope so I can re-use the original Bueler rings. This one will also be parked and then duracoated in a yet TBD color. timney trigger. Finally my 2011 deer gun. 1918 Bresica Carcano calvary carbine that will be rebarrled in 357 max. Action is alread t and d and will put a fixed 4x style LER scope. I am reusing a vintage boyds stock that the rifle came with. It is in pretty rough shape, but I have decided to sand off the finish. Then Duracoat the stock in a fall and or winter camo color scheme and I'll take it from there. I have some more ideas on the drawing board after this round for 2012. Not 100% sure of these just throwing them out there. 1. In the mood to try another mosin. Maybe an all white snow camo sniper rifle.... 2. A Mauser or Carcano in 358 gremlin. - 2012 Deer gun???? 3. A Mauser or Carcano in 7.62x39 Russion.
  19. LMAO At first I thought this was a gag site. It's not. Wow. 10 bucks for two rolls of dyed TP. My Dad always said theres more money in hunting the hunter... This definitively proves it.
  20. I am scratching my head hear. I have traxhed three oak bushing trying to get this barrel off. I am getting the vice so tight is fracturing the bushing when compressed along the horizontal grain... This thing will not budge and I soaked it for three weeks in WD40. I am applying sore penetrating oil daily and tapping the action on the bottom metal lightly with hammer to aid in penetration and hopefully loosen. Been at it for about a week now. I also thougt about ordering some aluminum stock and manufacuring my own bushing, but out of aluminum. Seems like I destroy the oak and they are not cheap, but far less expensive than a 100 dollar piece of aluminum block. I have another idea of using a strap wrench in conjunction with my action wrench and barrel vice to see if that might give the grip and opposing rotational froce to keep it from slipping in the barrel vice. Granted I will have to ask one of my sons to help by manning either the action wrench or strap wrench. I am just not sure if the strap wrench will ratchet down to the diameter and reall actually help in this case. Never used a strap wrench before except to get out oil filters. Thoughts please and it is greatly appreciated. Darin
  21. Great Hunt and Great Shot! 60 yard shot with a passthorgh and you got a perfect heart shot... Wow... Awsome. I don't even have a 60 yard pin on my bow. Best I have done is 27 yards. The last pic was priceless.
  22. Well, it looks, cool, it feels cool, but it shoots like crap with 45 LC. I tried several differnt loads. I got 1 decent 3 shot group (touch at 25 yards) one time of a rest with 7.5 gr of HP38 and a 225 Hornady flextip bullets, but also had two fiers in the same 5 shot group. It would probably do ok at very short ranges (50 and under) for deer, but I got a bow for that. I never ran 410 shot through it cause I really didn't get it for that reason. Just a bonus if it did well. It is getting traded today or tomorrow.
  23. Totally and completely awsome!!!! Way to go!!!! Hope you all have many more great hunts and memories. My sons youth hunt is this weekend. Wish us luck.
  24. That may explain the erratic patterns so far. I ran about 30 jacketed bullets so far using the Hornady bullets and am getting improved accuracy on about 3 of 5 shots at 25 yards, but still not happy with it. It is not near as accurate as my 357 mag Carcano bolt action or the 44 mag Styer bolt action for that matter. I never put together that the cylinder measurements coud vary that much. I also may have had a loose scope that was causing issues. So I am not ready to call it a bust just yet. Did not discover that until last night when cleaning it after shooting yesterday. So I am not ready to ditch this just yet. Jury is still out. I am loading up another 50 rounds and will shoot some more by mid week. This is this things last chance. If no siginigficant improvement is noted it's getting traded in.
