  1. horsefly, I will take the liberty here of answering this for you. Look in Sporterizing section in the pinned announcement at the top. You will find the info part way down on page one. Hope this helps. swamp thing
  2. Folks, sometimes I think we get busy rapped up in our everyday lives and tend to forget how much time and effort a project that others are undertaking requires. This site is just such a project. I have no doubt as to the amount of work, frustration and cost Thatt has went into setting up and continuing to run this site. We would all be at a loss if it were to go away from lack of support. If you can do so, I would hope that you might take a minute and contribute a bit to the cause. I wish not to step on anyones toes here, or come off sounding badly in any way. Simply put, it takes everyone here to make this site what it is and I only wish to see the burdens associated with it spread out amoung the masses. Lets give FC a break here and let him know it is important to all of us. Dave
  3. Tony, I sent you an email about this. Dave
  4. Well, I personally got started by thoroughly messing up an original stock and being forced to find a way out. As for the next toy, tuff to say. It is kind of an impulse thing with these type projects. Bored today, so what shall I whittle on. No, really the next toy shall remain intact I believe. It is some of the in stock items that have fear in their eyes at this point!! Glad you are still growing closer to the MN. They creep up on a guy. That one would look real good in a new walnut shell don't you think? swamp thing
  5. Adding on this idea, if you stack multiple case/board layers you could have a book shelf or tape shelf.
  6. happens to be on this there are a couple of things worth saying here. First off I think I speak for everyone that the loss of mfrc would be a tragic event in each of our lives. I for one start and end my day with visits to the site and look forward to it always. As for the second thing I speak for myself and will let everyone else make their own judgement. When I sent my check it was unconditional support. If the site were to end up gone I do not want a refund for the contribution. You have spent far too much time and effort to carry the burdon of whom would get what back in my opinion. There are some things that I cannot put a price on and the efforts you have gone to and continue to go to are worth more than any amount I could afford to send. Hang in there buddy and don't think twice about refunding to me if it comes to that point. Dave
  7. farmall. I did have the same problem once with one of these safeties that I used on a turk bolt. It has been some time since that happened but if memory serves me here goes. When the rifle was fired, the bolt could not be opened, but if I wiggled the safety while trying to open the bolt I could find the spot that would allow it to work. Seems the safety set just a shade too deep into the shroud and I had to lightly file the rear of the cam area of the safety. If you can get the bolt to open a few times this way carefully examine that area of the safety and see if you can find a small burr or spot that seems to be binding. Try comparing the MarkII to the original for length and the contour of the camming area. Hope this helps. swamp thing
  8. I have often thought how the word census in the case of government might just as well read control. When they send their forms out it is pretty obvious they want far more than just a number count. Then, if not filled out you get called, visited and threatened with being in violation of the law. I too skip most of the questions on the forms. The last time we ended up with one of the long forms and I refused to fill it out except for the few relivent questions. Thought I had heard the last of them, but in the end they showed up at the house while I was at work and convinced my family to give in. Wish I had been there at the time, as they would have gotten the door slam treatment from me. Anytime they are that persistant it makes me suspicious as to the real intent of their endeavers. swamp thing
  9. Thanks for the kind words fellows. It has been a good birthday and I appreciate all the nice wishes. Looking forward to many more to come. Dave
  10. Well friends, today I have official become eligable to be classified as a curio or relic, maybe both. Funny how the years creap up on you and the first thing you know a long time has passed by. Can't really complain though. I still get to enjoy some of the things that are most important to me. Have noticed that things come a bit slower and the rifles all kick harder than they did when I was a lad. Thank goodness for foam rubber sewn in the shooting shirt. Rubber recoil pads are a plus as well. Now if I could just remember where I left them! swamp thing
  11. I actually had not considered changing the trigger on this rifle yet, but would not rule it out in the future. It does have a fairly decent trigger pull for a MN, but as always the better the trigger pull the more improved is the groups. Horsefly, you had mentioned the bolt notch in the stock before. The funny thing here is that originally I had used one of the ATI bolt handle kits and so the notch was cut for it. When I did the bolt handle for this bolt I had to duplicate the angles so that it would fit the notch in the stock. Also, although hard to tell in the photos the bolt handle is filed flat on the top and bottom surface in a spoon type fashion. Just thought you might find that interesting. swamp thing
  12. Ok guys, this is what I have found. While signed in go up to the top of the page and click on my controls. Then on the left menu select board settings and the screen for the time zone will come up. Select the time zone you are in and make sure the daylight savings time box has a check in it. Then at the bottom click to apply settings and your post time will be correct. Hope this helps. Dave

    ATI stock

Aren't the ati stocks black? If so, why not use acraglas with the black color added to it and fill the areas with that. You could use it all the way up the barrel channel for that matter, bedding the whole barrel. If you want it free floated, use one or two layers of masking tape on the barrel then coat that with Johnsons paste wax. After the bedding sets up, remove the tape and the barrel will have sufficient clearance to slide a dollar bill all the way up the length of it when installed in the stock. If the stock is another color, Brownells has different dyes for the acraglas. Hope this helps. Dave
  14. Jason, First off let me say that the bolt handle is certainly different, but then you stated you wanted something different to begin with. While it is not personally where I would have gone, I see nothing wrong with what you have done here. The stock and rifle look good as well, and the bolt gives it a definate style of it's own. Don't let others statements get the best of you. It is your rifle to do with as you see fit. Enjoy it as you should. I noticed the guy with the puke filled keyboard did not sign in either. Dave
  15. FC, I too would chip in a bit on this if we find out that it is going to work out. I am sure that at this point we are all a bit nervous as to the outcome of the server. Just let us know what you decide to do and I have no doubt the funds will be there for the site. Dave OOPS, guess the icon got in the wrong place
  16. z1r, Thanks for the information about why not to rust blue an assembled barrel and action. Not meaning to steal the post, but I was contemplating taking a shot at rust bluing on an old rifle of mine that simply needs to be blued. Maybe I had better re-think this plan. I had not considered the oil in the thread area prior to this. Dave
  17. Emul8, I never considered the "violated" aspect to the equation when suggesting the Bobbitt idea. Guess I should think things through a bit better in the future.LOL Dave
  18. Doble, Glad to hear that you went ahead and counterbored it. I am sure that it will make a definate improvement if the muzzle was worn as you described. Did you try the cotton ball through it to make sure you had no burrs from the bit? Dave
  19. Sailormilon2, I could be wrong on this, but I was under the impression that she in fact worked for a company which was part of American Tool companies. They are. or at least were, the makers of Vice Grip. They had a sister company that goes by the name of Pro Snip. I am thinking that Lorraina was the chief in charge of testing and developement in this division. Just pure spectualation on my part though. Dave
  20. Emul8, as I recall the quickest way to solve this delema was created by a woman named Lorraine Bobbitt. Forgive me if this name is mispelled, but I am sure you know of whom I speak. Maybe it isn't for everyone, but effective don't you think? Just a bit of fun here. Dave
  21. A few years back I was enlisted to be on an advisery committee for one of the public school systems in Nebraska. I was approached for this position because I was the department head for a drafting department at the company I worked for. When enlisted for the position it was under the pretense that the school board wished to know what could be done to improve the graduating students performance in college level computer drafting and design classes and ultimately in their careers. After a short time it became very apparent that there was no real interest in what people in the field had to say about what was best for the students. It did however look good for the schools administration to be able to say they were taking these steps. As with many things, the ultimate goal revolved around politics and as already stated by others here, how to best keep the extra funds rolling in. Ultimately not only the students but the country suffer the consequences. Dave
  22. Doble, you certainly have gotten some good advise from the others on this old rifle. I was wondering, have you gotten to do anymore with it yet. Let us know what route you take and what the results of them are. As I stated before, they are amoung my favorite old rifles. Seems that they have a way of growing on a fellow. Dave
  23. Emul8, If I might give some advise on this subject, it would be get out of kalifornia before it is too late. I have always heard the horror stories about it out there, but look what is has gone and done to you now. Run, don't walk, to the nearest border and save yourself. Dave
  24. While I am fairly new around here, I must say that one of the things that I like about this site is that people can say pretty much what is on their minds. I have spent much time reading this site as well as the others. I finally got to the point that I simply don't frequent any of the other sites because there seems to always be the bickering. Then, as soon as you say something that is not within the agreement of those in power so to speak, zap, you're outta there. Of course we all know how true this is with one site in particular. You best not have any ideas that are in disagreement with the few self claimed experts or the brow beating will commence and from that point on you will be shunned like a red headed step child. My hat is off to all here for being grown up and allowing everyone to have an opinion even if it is not within the mainstream line of thinking. Thanks guys and gals, gotta make sure I don't leave Emul8 out here, for allowing others to be a part of the family. Dave
  25. Doble, I have on one occasion counterbored a barrel for a 30/30 using a bit chucked on the drill press. It did turn out well and eliminated the problem that I had, which was bad pitting right at the muzzle. One thing though that I think would be a real good idea is after you have done your counterboring, take a cotton ball and push it through the bore from the chamber end. As it exits the muzzle check to see if it comes out cleanly or if it is pulling strands of cotton off as it goes through the newly cut crown. This will tell you if there are any burrs that could constitute an obstructed bore. I have used this method on some of my own rifles and it will quickly show any problems that might exist. Hope this helps. Dave
