  1. Thanks gun nutty! Like I said stupid question. I am just a shooter and all the loading stuff is still very fuzzy to me. I hope to start loading and trying to learn these things soon but now Im just ignorant to that stuff.
  2. I guess why Im asking is because it would be a way to have something similar to a .308 that loaded good through a Mod 98 action.
  3. Hey guys Im not a reloading whiz or gunsmith but a buddy of mine asked me this and I was wondering if this gets done often or if it would even be worth the trouble. Has anyone necked a 8mm cartridge down to shoot 30 cal ammo? It seemed like a vallid question but it may be old hat around here. I know you would have to rebarrel and all that but just wondering if anyone has done that and if it was worth the trouble and/or cost. Wouldnt it just be a souped up .308? Thanks Paul S
  4. No I missed it. Couldnt afford anything then anyway . Maybe next time
  5. Hey Okie Im in Valliant. I think we've met before
  6. Here she is!!! I fixed the break before I could get pics loaded but I used the metal rod and epoxy. I embedded a threaded steal rod in the wood pointing from the front to butt inside the stock so if it did erbreak it wouldnt be so apt to fly back in my face. I also put a 3/8 dowel rod all the way through from top to bottom for extra strength because it has some real recoil. The stock was then reshaped on the fore end and I also added my version of a shnobel(sp?). The wood is a bit of a mistery because it has open grain like walnut but the grain is kinda like maple. The color is natural because I didnt use any stain so its a lot darker than maple. The stock was so beatiful and comfy I hated to scrap it and this was my first attempt at sporterizing so if it dont work I will atleast have learned some stuff. This was my first attempt at this bad of a break so I hope it will hold up because I intend to try to burn the rifling out of it as soon as possible. I also intalled a scope, safety and a butter knife bolt handle so Im good to go.
  7. Pecatonica and dixie gun works have a lot of seconds material that is discounted. If you call em and tell em you want a stripped down inexpensive kit they may not be much more than most factory kits. Not to mention you would have much better parts. The trick if you have never done it is get a step by step book. Both of these companies have such books. But they may still be a lot more. I definitly understand budgets these days The guys at Pecatonica are really nice and helpfull. I dont think they would mind giving you some ideas at all. Good luck!!! I love taking white tail with a rifle I have built
  8. Link didnt work so just google it and you should find it easy
  9. The last rifle I built was from Pecatonica Longrifle. They have great stuff and you can get em as close to finished as you want. I built my wife a Vincent Ohio rifle and it turned out beautiful. They have a good web site : http://www.longrifles-pr.com/index/shtml
  10. That is very funny!!!!!!! Mickey Mouse outfit = Obama Cabinet LMBO!!!!!!!
  11. I was thinkin about the 2 part epoxy with the threaded steal rod. I will try to get pics uploaded some time today
  12. I have to say I have never been a fan of the way mossin nagants looked but that rifle looked spectacular.
  13. I have a pawn shop prize model 98 oberndorf that someone put a very nice flamed WALNUT!! stock on and then somehow they broke it at the wrist and used SHEETROCK SCREWS to fix it!!!!!. I dont want to replace the stock because it is litterally the nicest stock I have seen. I want to glue it and put dowels in it for extra support. What kinda glue do you recomend. I was thinkin 2 part epoxy or gorrilla glue. Any suggestions???? Thanks PaulS
  14. I have used Pecitonica Long rifle and had good luck with them in the past. I havent got replacement parts but I have built a couple of rifles with their parts and they have good stuff and reasonably priced. Thanks for the heads up on TOTW though!
  15. I am ROFLMBO!!!!!! That sounds like my house!!!
  16. I live in the sticks of Oklahoma and we have a lot of coyotes. A coyote is hard to get the drop on and take good aim so I recomend the shotgun idea.Another very effective rifle is a ruger 44 mag semi auto carbine. That is a bad cat at close range and is very small , little recoil and wont travel a mile. They dont make em anymore but with some lookin you can find em for 300 or 400 bucks used. Another idea is a leg trap with some bacon on it. No meat eatin critter in the world can resist bacon. Then you can take a little more care when shooting. Antifreeze last I heard is different than it used to be so its not as poisonous and poison is a pretty bad way to die anyway. I am kinda soft hearted and hate for even a coyote to suffer. I never had much trouble with em around here so they may not be much of a problem for ya cause they are pretty scared of humans. Most ranchers around here kill em and hang em on the nearest fence and they kinda clear out of that area so if you dont have neighbors I would recomend that. Otherwise you may hafta kill em all to get rid of em. Good Luck Paul S
  17. That will make ya think. I'm glad you were ther to help. God must have been at work with that to keep you from running over the woman on the ground. Do you know if she lost the baby?
  18. kinda makes me proud Im an Okie!!!
  19. I want to eventually build a custom mauser 98 in the old european sporter style. Where is the best place to find the old style mannlicher stocks? I dont mind if they arent totally shaped because I would like to do some finishing on it myself Thanx Paul S
  20. Vlad that is an awesome rifle and if mine does that well at 100 yds I will be very pleased!!!! I would love to find a stock like that only in a mannlicher style. I love those old german sporters like that. I have decided to keep the original barrel and ts at the gunsmith having a winchester style safety and tapped for a scope. I hope to make it resemble your rifle though. LOL
  21. Mission acomplished on the eye catcher!!!! Well finished flame maple always classes up a rifle or anything else for that matter!!!!
  22. I have been wanting to build a rifle with an Allan Box Lock from Pecatonica Long Rifle for the longest time but never seen one finished. It looks very easy to build. Is the firing system dependable and is it very heavy? Just curious about em. Anyone got pics of a finished rifle? Thanks Paul S
  23. I've tryed conical bullets through mine and found if you dont have a fast twist barrel it usually tumbles and key holes on target. Hope it works better for ya!!!I have stayed strictly patched round balls and they all shoot great
  24. Rust is a big problem to look for in BP rifles. Some people forget to clean them and they rust in the breech of the rifle. If it has much rust in the bore I would stay away unless you are pretty good at lapping barrels. I find the side locks to be more fun and challenging but thats my opinion. They are less costly to shoot than a sabot style round but they dont shoot as accurate as inlines. But I have killed everything I've shot at and I hunt with patched round balls. If you want long range accuracy you should shoot an inline, but if you want a bit more of a challenge I would recomend an antique style sidelock. Happy Hunting!!!!
  25. I dont know why Im worried about that cause Ive never shot more than once at any kind of big game!!!!! LOL Thats the problem with doin custom stuff is you get carried away with silly details that probably wont matter. LOL I will trust he has experience enough to do the best it can be done and leave him alone.
