  1. Do you think it would be a good idea to ask the smith to try to make sure it isnt tucked too close to the stock? I dont want to be one of those customers that drives him crazy but once its on its on. Paul S
  2. Im having some work done to my Oberndorf 8mm. One of the things bein done is having the butter knife style bolt handle welded on. Has anyone ever used one of those? I liked the looks of it cause I like the old german sporters but I dont know how comfortable they are to use, and handle with gloves on. Anyone ever used one very much? I hope I dont hate it
  3. Well I just dropped the old warhorse off at the gunsmith to have it drilled and tapped for a scope, new butter knife bolt handle installed, and a model 70 style safety installed!!!!! Im pretty excited about it. Thanks to you guys I decided to keep the 8mm barrel. I did have him to make sure the head space was correct and bolt face was in good order. My dad is a hard core Model 70 man and my wife dont give a crap about it so you guys are the only people I have to tell about it. LOL Now I cant wait to get it back and do my best to burn the rifling out of it!!!
  4. The only missing part is the front hand gaurd (I think thats what its called). I want to also get an original bayonet for display purposes. Are those things hard to find? I found the bayonet with a sheeth for $65. Is that a fair price? I thought it was cool finding an original war horse in the closet. It was for my favorite price too.... FREE!!!!
  5. When my grandpa passed my dad gave me his old deer rifle. It is a mauser 98 with nazi crests all over it(numbers matching). He bought it in a v.f.w sale in the 50s for $12 LOL. The reciever has BYF stamped on it as well as 44 (Im assuming that is the year). It also has some sort of dovetail on the side of the rear sight base.Is that some sort of scope mount? What does the BYF stand for? I would just like some info on these markings and the dove tail on the site base. Im leaving it as is and would never sell it but just curious. Im not familiar with mausers but the old gun got me hooked on em Thanks Paul S
  6. I've had a russian made sks since the early nineties. I dont hunt with it anymore but its a fine rifle for what it is for. It has NEVER jammed and I have shot more rounds through it than the vietnamese army. LOL But it was bought on a whim of my dad who found 5 of them for a great price. Next thing ya know me and my brothers had a sks. It will never take the place of my pre 64 model 70 or my 98 mauser but it serves its purpose well.
  7. I have automotive paint guns and a compressor ( Im a painter by trade ) wonder if those will work on the spraying
  8. I was wondering if anyone on here has used duracoat finish on barrels and actions? I would be using it on a sporterised mauser. Does it look goofy on that type of rifle and does it hold up well? I dont want it if its prone to chip or scratch off and I would only want to use black or grey. I cringe at the thought of a purple rifle.LOL
  9. I appreciate the info guys. I think I will hold off on rebarreling till I get it scoped up and try some 100 yrd groups. But all in all from the stats and the article it sounds like it will be a good calibur for my needs. The recoil is one thing I was hopin to get rid of but Im a big boy and I stand up to pee nowadays so thats not a real big deal. Once again you guys are awesome and thanks for the info Paul S
  10. It shoots pretty good now but I havent got a scope on it yet and Im sure I will be able to tell better after its scoped up. Right now it has a lyman peep sight on it and at 40 yards I was getting a 1 inch group without sandbags (I used a portable shooting bench). Im just not sure what it will do at 200 yards.
  11. Thanks for the link!!! Im surprised how the 8mm was so much more versital than the other caliburs I was lookin at!!!!
  12. Hey guys I know its a stupid question but Ive been told the 8mm drops like a rock. Ive also heard its a great round. Im not made of money and I also have three kids that insist on eatin every day so if I can make a accurate hunting rifle and not hafta rebarrel that would be awesome. What are the real world longrange capabilities of the 8mm with a good handload. The bore is bright and shiny thanks to a lot of cleaning on my part. I know someone here has more experience with em than the people that Ive been talkin to. Thanks In Advance Paul S
  13. Thats good to here. I thank you guys again for the info. I was raised by a collector of pre 64 model 70s and most of the rifles I cut my teeth on were belted magnums and a .270 was a smaller cal in my house so these caliburs are a little foriegn to me. I just wanted something that shot fast and flat but would drop a muley pretty easy. This wont be my last project Im afraid. Thanks Paul S
  14. Thanks guys!! As I said before the only reason I wanted the 308 was for accuracy and low recoil. What would be another type of round I could go with that would work in a long action and retain low recoil but have high accuracy. Im really not even to worried about the recoil but I just want something that I dont dread shooting but has potential to be a tac driver. Maybe a 25-06, 7x57,or a 6.5x55?
  15. Hello annointed ones!!!!! Im a total newby so be patient but I have some questions about my newly aqcuired 8 mm oberndorf 98. I want to build a .308 from it but Ive been told by some that the action is to long. I see .308 mausers all over the place but dont know if there is a certain type of 98 to use or if all will make a good .308. I have a 270 but would like a super accurate rig with little recoil. If I cant do a 308 what would be a good alternative that would shoot flat, accurate and be able to find ammo easily? Im a hunter wanting it for white tail and mule deer. Im not a bench shooter if that is any help. I thank you for all your infinite wisdom. If needed I can post pics Thanks Paul S P.S It has a 5 digit serial # and a 44 stamped on top of the receiver which I think means the make year if that helps any
