  1. Hatcher’s Notebook has some great information on the heat treatment and safety of these early Springfields. It has a lot of other useful information as well. It is worth reading and worth the shelf space it will take up in your gun library.
  2. I have had good luck using jacketed ammo to remove lead. My theory is that being loaded to higher pressures and temperatures the copper jacked pushes the lead out and the hot gasses do the rest. I am not sure I am right about why, but it works.
