  1. well, modern firearm deer season has been over for some time here in washington. it started October 15 and ended october 23. an over the counter tag for buck (3 pt minimum) will run a resident $39.42 for tag and license. $394.20 for a non-resident. we can put in for drawings on other specialty tags, antlerless whitetail, any whitetail, any buck, etc. for an additional $5.48. i ended up with a little three point (forked with eyeguards) whitetail. his brother was a four point, and fell to our hunting partner. my dad didnt end up with anything, but we did see some dandys after the season closed.
  2. Can a large ring barrel be turned down to a small ring thread? i dont have any of those fancy readin' books here at work, and i was just wondering...
  3. hey morgansboss, what kind of shop do you have that allows 12' 3/4 threaded rod! WHEW! J/K! i have seen one of these built somewhere (on here before the crash or a book) and it looks really easy to build! and i would imagine a lot cheaper than the $80 ones from brownells. good write up! thanks. heath
  4. well, i ordered a turk from SOG. i had to pass on the polish 64 for now... my wife was none to impressed with me getting another mauser. i am sure a little pistol would go unnoticed, though... just have to wait for some things to come together...
  5. hmmm...what's wrong with that stock? OH! you're shooting it with the wrong hand! J/K! i just ordered a k.kale from SOG, should be here mid week. i've only had true large rings (and one yugo 24/47), so i hope i get what i am expecting! hope mine looks half as good as yours. i plan on 7mm mauser.
  6. WHY do i sporterize? i like to be different. Unique, even. I like to build and tinker. i enjoy the challenge of learning something new. i have no willpower over the purchase of firearms (unfortunately my wife does not suffer from lack of restraint, and reminds me of that often). All in all, i have desires that no current RemWinSavage can satisfy. there is just that feeling of holding a true piece of history in your hands. and modifying it! I appreciate the functionality of a battle-ready mauser, but i REALLY enjoy a beautiful piece of walnut wrapped around a deeply blued receiver, welded handle, scoped and loaded! (now i just need to get off my butt and finish one, so i can realize this dream!)
  7. well, it looks in the flyer that the plastic grips are screwed on, so that means i could use some of the wood around my house to fashion a set of grips. Walnut? Tiger Wood perhaps? fiddle back maple? i've got quite an assortment of wood i use for carving...so just another project! looks like i'll order one first of the month... should i tell my wife?
  8. ok guys and gals, anyone have an opinion or seen in person the Polish Marakov 64 9x18 pistols that SOG is selling? at $140 bucks, it LOOKS like a pretty decent deal for a small auto pistol. Sure, i'd rather have a J-frame .38 or a Walther, but until i find one of those at the same price, i'm looking pretty hard at this little black gun. Not C&R, i understand, but there are lots of transfer dealers around here that are pretty reasonable. so, opinions?
  9. i would 2nd the 7mm mauser for the lightweight rifle. what a great all around caliber. nothing wrong with a 7mm/08, but i think there is just something about that 100+ year old caliber that still gets the job done. there is also .243, 6mm rem .257 roberts.... as for the Mark X action, if the feedrails allow, either a 338/06 or 35 Whelen would be a terrific choice. i hear 338/06 is going to be offered in factory ammo more and more, but a 35 whelen i bet will do the same job. i would be interested to see if anyone has any info on which has more felt recoil?
  10. excellent! thank you for the clarification. heath
  11. hmmm.... those seem like they'd work, but i thought there was one that was india on one side and crystalon on the other - or does that really matter, as long as it's got fine/course grit?
  12. i looked on brownells site (not at home with the book) and didnt find the stone listed that i believe Z recommended. i just know it's got Crystalon on one side and India on the other and was big enough to do a receiver. anyone have a part #?
  13. sure i'm interested. i take the recommendation of people you guys have used AND ARE PLEASED with very seriously. i dont want my stock to end up junk (although, since it's me, anything is possible once i get my hands on it! ). you guys think that most guys will have inlets for a Yugo? Edit: if it helps, i have the original military stock, could possibly be used just for the action inlet and leave the blank a blank to be cut by hand.
  14. so, i have a really nice black walnut blank that i am looking to have turned for a Yugo 24/47 in a style like the Richards Modern Classic. According to their website, that will run my $85+shipping. i heard that boyds will cut your blank, also. i just got an email from them saying that in addition to the price of say a boyds JRS ($65)., add $100. my question is, is the inletting from Boyds superior enough to Richards to justify double the price? i was also give the name of Donnie Gemes at Show-Me Gunstocks in Warsaw, MO. anyone have experience with this stockmaker? i hear he is a former foreman from Fajen of old. i have a phone # and address, will probably give him a call to check whether or not he can do Yugos (and pricing).
  15. well, i have it made there, my wife thinks they all look a like. but that is also the problem. "they're all the same thing." so i am having the barrel delivered to my office. it may stick past the top of my bag a little, but if i do it right, she'll never notice. she didnt see the buick heads, connecting rods and pulleys that materialized in the garage....yet God help me if she does...
  16. bidding.....waiting.....wondering how to sneak it past the wife..... EDIT: went ahead and bought it at the buy it now price. what the hell, only $10 bucks difference. still wondering how to sneak it in the house....
  17. rhys, thanks for the link... appears to be quite a deal, but the SS thing got me. thanks though. i'll keep after it!. heath
  18. so, i am researching 6mm Rem barrels, and i know you guys put a lot of stock behind Lothar Walther, but does LW have barrel blanks in .243 (6mm)? on their website, i only saw reference to threaded and chambered barrels, and not a 6mm Rem in sight. i have heard a few of you talk about special ordering, what kind of price am i looking at? this is for my yugo 24/47 antelope slayer. i have been polishing the bottom metal while i work out how to finance this thing. i probably asked this question on the EZ site....it doesnt remember, and neither do I! thanks heath
  19. 22/250? 6mm rem? any of the Bench rest cartidges: 6mm, 7mm, etc. (single shot would probably be your best bet since they're SOOO short). if you really want a .223, charles daly makes them....
  20. man, is it just washington, or does the entire country have such a high number of registered sex offenders? here on the east side of the state, we have 2 buildings downtown near a highschool that are like a halfway house for level III's! i say on the news the other day that there was a transient level III in the area with 15 (FIFTEEN!!!!!) CONVICTIONS! thanks governor!
  21. i have a Bell & Carlson on my 30/06 project. i liked the stock design better of the B&C than most of the others, but they're a bit pricey. and the fore end could probably use some stiffening. though i'll probably never do it. Heard only good things about B&C.
  22. about the head diameter, has anyone really had trouble with getting a 6.5x55 to chamber in a 98? arent some swedes (and other pre-98's) 7x57? that should mean the head diameters are close enough to get the rim to jump under the extractor, shouldnt it?
  23. well, they were stinking over the weekend, so i stripped it off. kinda a pain, and that smell really gets into the pores of your hands. i think i got it all off (my hands) and when i clean the horns of the residual blood, i'll wear gloves!
  24. 724wd... 1972 Chevrolet Pickup, 4 wheel drive. on a board dedicated to such vehicles, 724wd was taken, so i ended up with 724wdcopper by adding my dog's name. seems like that is a common occurance judging by the number of fellas here that have used a dog's name in their handle. when i joined this board, i stuck with my original 724wd because it's shorter... as far as emus go, i know my sister was quite interested in buying into them. never got around to it, and probably a good thing at that! i have not personally eaten any, but hey, it's meat, i'd knaw on a chunk if i was hungry. at least it's not soy based!
