I have a piece of walnut I had cut from a tree about fifteen years ago and am planning to use that. I had it turned into a classic sporter style before I moved here, by what is now Guns Stocks of America, I think. Anyway, the place is located in Yuba City, Ca. I have the action and need another hunting rifle like another hole in the head. All of the recent builds have been on synthetic stocks and thought I should utilize this one and build a nice sporter. My friend ordered a reamer, 8x57, from Midway and received it the other day. The concern is with the length of the solid pilot. He related to me via phone, we live in different states, that the pilot end of the reamer is a little over an inch long. This seems excessive to me, but I have never seen an 8x57 reamer before. Does this sound correct? Am I explaining it correctly? He plans to build an 8mm sporter and needs to finish the chamber. Kevin in Or.

Clemson, will you have the receiver heat treated after taking off so much metal? I know some that "freak" when just the crest is removed, and others seem to think it is o.k. I don't know what to think. Kevin in Or.

I guess for a light rifle, I would vote for the 7x57. I have used it wild boar hunting with excellent results, not to mention deer. For my elk rifle, I just finished a 338-06AI, with muzzle brake. Shoots like a champ. I do not like belted magnums, just my preference, and I wanted to build some sort of wildcat rifle just to be different from my norm. I haven't really had the time to take it out and build a load yet, but the limited rounds I have put through it were pleasantly surprising. I bedded it into a Hogue rubber overmolded stock, strictly utilitarian, but adequate for my hunting purposes. Kevin in Or.

I've had good luck hunting with the 7x57, shooting two very large wild boar with excellent results. You mentioned your grandfather will be using this rifle, recoil on 7x57 is mild, non-intimidating. I think he will enjoy shooting this caliber. My tuppence. Kevin in Or.

I might add my tuppence. I recently finished a 338-06 Ackley Improved. I, for some reason, don't want a magnum, but can acheive some good ballistics with this rifle. I'm loading with 210 Nosler Partitiions. I have always wanted a wildcat of some sort, and this one seems to fit the elk hunting ticket. I am still in the process of developing a load. I built this rifle on a Vz-24 action, and put a muzzle brake on the end of the tube. The noise doesn't bother me while hunting, and the recoil seems less than my 30-06. I think it will work out to be a good rifle. Kevin in Or.
