My Pet Peeve..... Flags At Half Staff.

I was at Cabelas a few days ago and the flags were down. I didn't bother looking it up to see why. (this shooting or that etc.) I propose we just leave the flags down for the remainder of Obama's time in office.

He makes the Carter years look like happy fun times.

The flags at half mast pisses me off too. The law on it is (or was anyway) that the United States of America Flag did not dip except for very, very few occasions, all quite spelled out. And a nut case shooting up whatever doesn't qualify. Every time I see a flag at half mast at a used car dealership, I feel like stopping in and asking them why and handing them a copy of the law.

While I was employed at the Post Office a co-worker and I lowered the flag to half mast after one of the numerous postal massacres. Many other post offices around the country did the same. Didn't take long for the flag to be ordered back up. My station manager received a copy of the official policy from the Postmaster General's office in DC. I can't recall the content of the letter but the law pretty well spells out when the flag can be lowered. One line I do recall something to the effect of "by order of the President of the United States". About a month or so after the incident, my station and many others around the country began installing padlocks on the flag pole's cable.

The co worker I lowered the flag with at a later date. Discovered the flags (Az and US) when lowered were just dumped into a box by the station's custodian. My co worker that walked with a limp from a Viet Nam wound. Went to the union and filed an official grievance. The custodian got his nose all bent out of shape after the grievance was resolved and he had to fold the US flag properly. The post office or the union had no authority on the state flag so the custodian continued to just drop it in a cardboard box.

When the Arizona Governor ordered state flags lowered usually after a LEO being killed in the line of duty. State offices would lower both US and Az flags. It was pretty much optional by the federal facility to comply by lowering the state flag only but the US flag had to stay up.

There are a few Post Offices in southern California that proudly fly the flag of Mexico and local postal mgmt. has refused to stop. Far as I know the Mexican flags are still up. One photograph I saw has the Mexican flag on the taller pole the US flag should be. The US and California flag are on the same pole at a lower level than the larger Mexican flag.

If true, please post pics, links, or locations. This will not continue.

I don't live in "Mexifornia" yet.

The last one I recall was in Huntington Park a burb of LA. At least that is the one I saw the picture of. Near by burbs of Maywood and Bell. I'm told the Mexican flag often flies at city and state govt offices but I have never seen it.

The LA resident and relative that told me about it. Said the area is not safe for non-Mexicans unless you are buying illegal drugs and drive on a major street. Veer off into a neighborhood controlled by a street gang. Might likely result in gun fire at your car.

The three cities you mention are predominately Latino, most of Mexican descent. But not near as ghettoish as many others in SoCal such as South Central LA aka WATTS or Compton.

Maywood and Bell are small cities and don't have any USPO within their boundaries. Huntington Park is a much larger city by comparison and has 3 PO's. None of which fly anything but US OLD Glory flags on their poles. Not even a Ca. State Flag.

Check for yourself. Go to Google Earth and check each location with "street view".

Had it been otherwise I would have been over there with a Buck Knife and a big bucket of Stink to spread around liberally.

DON'T KNOW WHAT HAPPENED AFTER EDITING AND POSTING SOME PICTURES AND LINKS. MY POST TURNED INTO GOBBLY-GOO!!

Maybe the picture I got was a typical internet hoax but doing a quick net search it does shows pictures of a Mexican flag at a Huntington Park PO either following or starting a protest. I spent a good deal of time as a kid, late 50's and early 60's in Huntington Park and Maywood. I went there in the early 80's and again late 80's. I could hardly believe the changes. I can't imagine what it looks like now.

Riding through what I believe is now Maywood. Down Slausen Av in I think it was named in the late 80's was my first real life encounter with street drug pushers. They were stopping traffic by having kids walk back and forth in a cross walk.

EDIT: This is not the picture I got via email. It shows a small Mexican flag at the Huntington Park PO. Doing an internet search the picture I was referring to I believe was taken at a school in the same area.

From time to time Messican flags do get put up where they don't belong during protests. And they are just as quickly removed after a quick photo-op. But to make the statement.

"There are a few Post Offices in southern California that proudly fly the flag of Mexico and local postal mgmt. has refused to stop. Far as I know the Mexican flags are still up. One photograph I saw has the Mexican flag on the taller pole the US flag should be."

Is much more than just a stretch.

"The US and California flag are on the same pole at a lower level than the larger Mexican flag. "

I believe you are refering to a protest at an El Monte High School school in 2009 where a bunch of ANCHOR BABY students. Pulled down the US Flag along with the Ca. flag and replaced them with a MESSICAN flag. This pic has been circulating ever since with a variety of untrue captions.

Correction......Correction..........Correction

City of Maywood does have a PO within it's boundaries. It is on the corner of Slauson and Pine. It is also the one pic. posted with a Messican flag over it. Which went up and down in short order as a photo op.

If you google "4379 Slauson, Maywood Ca" and check the Street View.

But in no way shape or form is it Proudly Flown.
