FC
I notice grizzly.com is now selling barrels, reamers, etc. Has anybody looked?
Dr.Hess
Huh. I guess that's a top of the line barrel they are selling there. At around five bills each, and still a whole lot of DIY, I think you really need to want that thing.
FC
I noticed that. Thing is, Grizzly is noted for affordability.
Dr.Hess
I drool over their lathes all the time. The come up on Craigslist, but people always wnt too much for them used and I can't justify spending the new price money on one. My 6" Atlas-Clausing does most of what I need. FC
I don't know squat about metal lathes. Guess I'm getting a bit too old to invest in something like that too heavily. Also, moving the bigger machinery that I want now is a bear. No forklift means borrowing a pallet mover, or rolling it over logs like the Romans did. Dr.Hess
My lathe only weighs a few hundred pounds with the cabinet. I've moved twice since I got it. I'm not planning on moving again. Anyway, it is the handiest tool I have ever bought. I've used it for everything from fixing toilets to fabricating Mercedes parts. I see them on Craigslist in the $600 range. You can get a new Chinese one about the same size for that or a little less. The Grizzly "gunsmith" lathes are much bigger, and from China. What I would like is in the $4K range. I tell people I have a lathe and they say "What can you do with that?" I tell them "Make anything round."
FC
I have a Delta wood lathe, so I know that part of the lathe world.
