FC
I cast .31 caliber bullets and experimented with my very lightly rifled 1847 Springfield Armi Italian reproduction rifle. So far the best performance was 2F, 90 grains, 8 or 10 bullets. It finally pierced the wine cooler refrigerator steel. 17 balls with 70 grains performed poorly. Dr.Hess
I would think that 90 grains of black powder would pack a pretty good punch. Is it just not penetrating? I mean, a 45-70 is 70 grains of black powder, originally, and no one ever said they didn't pack a punch.
FC
I didn't get much of any kick at all that matched what I got with the .69 caliber bullet until I got up to 80 grains, and the balls just dented the steel. I'm still not sure if energy drops with more .31 caliber balls? I'm guessing it would. There's little resistance to getting the bullets out of the barrel compared to a big honker .69 ball. Dr.Hess
How dies that compare to buckshot in a 12ga? I had an old Ford truck hood I found on the side of the road. I cut it up for targets. A 380 would just dent it. 45 made bigger dents. 9mm would go through.
FC
About the same recoil, but a much heavier gun.

Back in the 70’s at a desert shooting spot. There was an abandoned 1930’s Chevrolet. It was riddled with bullet holes but I was surprised by the numerous dents where bullets failed to penetrate.
