No idea on the mud, except it will change the cooling times, like putting "heat sync paste" in a Mauser bolt when you're welding on it or bending the handle. The Japanese built an entire religion around making those swords. There's a reason for every single step and ingredient, passed down for hundreds, maybe a thousand years. European sword makers tried to learn the secrets to the Japanese sword making. The Japs refused to reveal their secret methods even refusing large bribes of gold and jewels.
