For about 15 or more years we have been hearing that the nature of war has changed and that the future of war is the special operator and the drone. No-boots on the ground need apply. Get rid of those tanks and grunts and field arty. No more fighter planes and mass armies. Same idea after the Age of Religious Wars 1500 to about 1650. War would be waged by the kings with professional armies for limited objectives. Worked Until the French Revolution. 1789 when the mass armies of the revolution took most of Europe. Same thing between 1815 and 1914, war was to have rules and limits, when WW l and the Russian Revolution tossed the rules out....again. These things go in cycles. We changed the way our forces are trained..small war ..social action...anti-terrorism. When Mr Putin refused to play by the new rules and sent his army into the Crimea, short of atomic war, there was nothing we could do. Yes, you do need specialist troops. anti terrorist special ops types. But you Also need the the big divisions..the grunts with the rifles and tanks. FC Posted March 21, 2022 Report Share Posted March 21, 2022 We know there'll be gobs of papers, books, and changes in doctrine based on what's happening with puny soldiers with little weapons destroying pricey tanks and aircraft. I also think that people started really believing the Star Trek sort of line, that man evolves, and the idea of big wars and big nasty people was a thing of the past. ( oh and of course mock the crude Americans) Well It seems that it is WW lll with atomcs or ye old mass boots on the ground armies..Of course if the EU can get Uncle Sap to pay while they have Cradle to Grave socialism all the better..
