Dr.Hess
Yeah, 17% is a lot closer to the actual. Today, with every purchase recorded digitally, it would not be difficult at all to truly calculate inflation. But they use these made up numbers, as the article says, of a computer being faster today so it's "cheaper." BS, as you need a faster one to run current software. No one uses DOS3.3 and Wordstar on a PC XT.
FC
That computer part made no sense to me. So the government automatically figures stuff is cheaper because computers are faster?
Dr.Hess
Yeah, that's exactly what they do. Same with TV's. 15 years ago, a 55" TV cost X, say $2000. Today, it is $250. So, hey, MUCH cheaper, so DEFLATION. And they can then use that deflation to average out the cost of hamburger going from $1/lb to $5/lb. Actually, I think it was during the Regan administration that they started to fudge the inflation numbers, to stop SS from getting large COLA's and busting the budget. Then the dems took that and ran with it during the massive inflation that followed in the last couple decades.
