Rust Blue Formula and procedure

Recommended Posts

Both the procedure and the recipe for solution are very good.

The only thing I'd suggest in addition is to add a bit of detergent in the form of Selsun Blue shampoo. This shampoo contains selenium. Addition of this shampoo along with an equal volume of dishwashing detergent (I use Dawn) seems to produce better results (in my admittedly limited experience). The degergent helps keep incidental oil at bay, although its important to try to minimize exposure. The downside to adding detergent is that the bluiing solution will tend to foam. The little bubbles will mar the finish and so its important to remove them. The best way to remove bubbles/foam is to prevent them from forming in the first place. Apply the solution with a fresh cotton ball each stroke, and make each stroke long and even - like applying varnish. If you do get some bubbles a gentle wipe with a cleaning patch will usually remove them.

I encourage you home chemists to give this a try.
