Dr.Hess
Actually, that's a pretty good distance from Bear Butte, especially on foot/wagon. Closer to Deadwood. Our first trip to Sturgis, in 1986 on my shovelhead, we stayed at Bear Butte camp ground, at the lake in the map above. No bath facilities, so we would bathe in the lake. A bit cold. FC
We would drive by Bear Butte on the way to the Black Hills when I was a kid. In that area an Indian came zooming past us. A while later he was asleep, parked diagonally right across the middle of the two-lane highway! Mostly I lived in northeast SD, but we moved to Lead for a while. I remember at that time that there were Indians on Mount Rushmore, threatening to paint the presidents' faces red! Anyway, what a brutal story! Sounds as bad as the Comanches.
