car batteries for casting?

Recommended Posts

I just changed out my two diesel truck batteries. The core charge is only $5 each. It looks like the plates are pure lead, from what I read, but I'm not 100% sure on that. I'm considering burning in them in my burn pit, and salvaging the lead for casting. I'm guessing that is more than $10 worth of lead in there?

I've done it, years ago.  It is pure lead, but sulfated from being old dead batteries.  If you melt it down, you can get just the pure lead.  Now, pure lead does not make good rifle or pistol bullets.  Good for black powder, though.  You can mix it with other lead, like from wheel weights, and get it harder.

Last I looked, lead was a buck a pound.  Probably more today.

They should work great for black powder.  Just be careful dealing with the acid.  You could dump and neutralize the acid, rinse out the cells with water, then crack open the cases (an axe works well, ask me how I know,) get the plates out with said ax, then start melting them.
