Yeah, note that the engine was a single overhead cam design.  In that era (or shortly after) there were also double overhead cam engines.  Not sure about 4 valves per cylinder, but it wouldn't surprise me.

Also, in typical German engineering fashion, the machine gun control system was about 10x more complicated than what others used.  Others had a lobe on the camshaft without all the extra parts.

Per the vid, cam actuates a lever that actuates a ramp wheel that actuates the trigger.  Wheel is moved in and out based on the trigger.

Early systems, if I recall, included the cam lobe thing which may have been the system you were thinking of, and before that, metal guards on the back of the propeller to deflect bullets.  That one didn't work too well.
