Receiver Facing

Well, as promised, here are the steps that I use in facing a Mauser receiver. Note that some receivers do not require facing. If there is less than 0.002" difference, side to side, in the depth measurement from the receiver face to the inner (primary) torque shoulder, facing is really unnecessary. I did this one to illustrate the process.

First, mount the stripped receiver on the Brownells receiver facing mandrell, snugging it up with a crescent wrench while holding the receiver in your hand. Then mount the mandrell between centers on the lathe.

Take a very light cut with small feed. I cut in back gear at around 60 rpm. Initial feed is around .005" per revolution.

The finish cut is at 90 rpm and .002"/rev feed.

The face of the receiver is now perfectly aligned with the inner torque shoulder.

This one is pretty elementary, Jim, but it is one of those processes that we all have to do the first time once. It isn't so intimidating when you have it explained.
