ATF CONTINUES EFFORTS TO RETURN KATRINA GUNS

NEW ORLEANS -- The Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (ATF) is continuing its efforts to return firearms held for safekeeping after Hurricane Katrina to their rightful owners.

Several law enforcement agencies and National Guard units provided ATF with approximately 530 firearms they retained for safekeeping while searching for hurricane victims. The agencies turned to ATF because they did not have an adequate storage facility of their own to store the firearms or their storage facility was damaged by the hurricane.

ATF special agents have identified the legal owners of approximately 400 of the 530 retained firearms and returned their guns to them. In addition, ATF special agents have identified the owners of approximately 15 other firearms and are in the process of returning those guns as well. Before returning any firearm, ATF has conducted an investigation to ensure all of the owners were legally entitled to retain their weapons.

ATF will provide local law enforcement agencies in the New Orleans area with a list of the remaining firearms in ATF custody in order that these agencies and ATF can work together to return the few remaining firearms in ATF custody to the legal owners.
