Once again DT you have stated it best, and, I might add, most eloquently.

The truth lies in between and well away from the hysteria of either extreme.

I need to learn to talk like you.

Whatever this all has to do with Mausers.

reasons I don't understand believe that they should not try to assimilate into mainstream American culture - hence the resistance to learning English, proliferation of Chicano Studies programs in Universities, etc

It is simple the Government pays people and gives them special rights, if they are a "minority group".

It is called affirmative action or equal opportunity...so if you just an American...TS.

but if you are a ""Fill in in the blank________American, you get all sort of goodies.

I blame us for that.

It might impact our ability to keep our Mausers...if Billary gets elected again...

Karl - I think you're right (as usual). We need to go back to the "all men are created equal" system.

I also believe that affirmative action should be scrapped. If our government reflected equality it would be one step in the right direction. I have read some interviews of Clarence Thomas that stated this point far better than i could ever accomplish. I believe that we as a people have moved on from the racist ways of the past. If I were a 'minority' I would not want to work where I wasn't wanted, and I would rather get hired because I was the man for the job rather than filling a quota. It is much the same as when I was job hunting when i was fresh out of the Marine Corps. There were applications that wanted my job history minus military service. I gave those applications back as I didn't want to work for those businesses.

My family comes from immigrants here from the last 100 years. Many of them "Americanised" their names to fit in better. They became legal citizens. They sent their kids to school to learn English and only allowed them to speak English at home. They served in time of war. They are proud to be Americans, and their lives have improved by hard work. Times have not always been good, but they are better than living as sharecroppers in Finland. We like our Finnish heritage, but love this country

I too, would like to better my life.

I know a way to do it, but it is illegal (AGAINST THE LAW).

There is a lot of money that is held by the rich people, and they keep it in a place called a bank.

If I could break into (cross the border into) that bank, I could better my life. As long as nobody stops me, I am home free. A better life for me, a better life for all the little ones in my family. A better life because I saw a way to break into (cross the border into) that bank.

Since I feel that the rich should help feed me (and all the little ones in my family), I will break into (cross the border into) that bank.

And if I get caught, they will only send me back home (where I can draw up a new plan to repeat the mission).

I see a better life now, for me and the little ones in my family. If that damned bank didn't have so much security (more than our borders), I would be enjoying it already.

To hell with security!

And you really think that giving them all jobs (at the pay scale you are tooting) will keep them away from the bank? If so, why do we still have bank robbers? Why do the banks still have all that damned security? Why don't we trust everybody?

A chicken in every pot, and a job for every Mexican!

If your neighbor breaks into a house and steals the folks Mauser collection, and you knowingly buy some of them, then you will be charged and procecuted as assessory to the crime. The meskins swim our river under the cover of darkness and violate our laws as soon as they step on our soil, then we hire them. Why isn't the dude hiring the wet charged with assesory to the crime? It's the same thing as the dude driving the get-away car in a bank robbery,he didn't go in and rob them, but he sure as hell took part.If you want to get rid of cockroaches in a house, you clean up the house, removing the reason for them to be there, and the reason is our own people stepping on us to make their fortunes.I don't say all this just from what I read or hear.I live it every day having to dodge forklifts pulling trash wagons through our factory driving by wetbacks, doing a job that was taken away from American workers, not because they couldn't get Americans to do the work, because when they hired for the job, hundreds showed up on the day they accepted applications,it was because the could pay a man working people illegally to get the job done. One man getting rich,25 meskins making tax free money sending it home to Mexico, and 25 Americans trying to find a 12.00 an hour job, that sucks and sounds just like the peon system Mexico has in place now.Jerry I'm so sorry about my crummy spelling!

Fritz, I hope you don't get too much more desperate 'cause we all know what you've been planning.

Again, I'm not saying its the right thing to do, only that I understand it. You're analogy is right-on morality-wise. The problem is that morality goes out the window when you're hungry. Every human is smart, even Mexicans. They will find a way if there's an opportunity available. I really do believe that we all would if we were in desperate circumstances, and from reading what a lot of you have written I can tell that you'd be hell to reign-in if desperate.

I think that Horsefly is right, we need to reduce the incentives that are causing the problems - of course in addition to increased border security. I think that all of us resourceful folks know that it won't take too much observation, thought or planning to get around any security barrier placed in the desert Southwest. Its one of my favorite places - no annoying other people for miles.

So I suggest that the only solution is to make illegal immigration much less attractive. Hefty fines on illegal employers would be a good start, and might help fund increased border security. If there are no illegal jobs, there will be no illegal immigration to fill them. This will likely raise the cost of products dependent upon illegal labor (what are these things - I think we all consume them), but I believe its the right thing to do, and I'm willing to pay more to shore-up our Southern border.

It would also be nice if a modern McCarthy would show-up to counter the modern Pinkos.

DT,

I'll have to say that you've made some sense and made me think a bit. I'm sure that I'm not the only one that just blames the Mexicans since they are here. Hadn't really given much thought to drying up demand for them.

Mentally, I usually jump to the harsher conclusion for solving such a problem.

Unfortunately, we still have a very expensive problem. A few years ago when I was still doing Home Health Care I had to see a young Mexican fella who had gotten himself looped and had a car accident. He was taken to a university hospital, underwent orthopedic surgery to patch him up and came back home with orders for nursing and physical therapy. We, the tax payers footed the bill as this guy was Indigent. It will only get worse when/if these people are legalized and then have open access to taxpayer-funded med care.

LaRaza, The Dem Party, Vincente Fox, someone is costing us a bunch of $ by enouraging more illegal immigration. I'm sure that many come for a better life etc but suspect that a large percentage are here to stir the pot. When this is added to the increase in demand for medical care as the babyboomers retire and go onto Medicare it looks much worse. One would think that the number crunchers would take care of the problem. If this were GM or Ford the problem would likely have been solved a few years ago. Maybe we need more of a corporate mentality in running Gov.

YES!

In the case of the recent marches it seems to be the Socialist party in America and labor unions (in paticular the Service Employees International Union [sEIU http://www.seiu.org/]) that are organizing. Of course the Dems are loving it and the press is massively covering without mentioning the organizations really behind it. These people are legitimate Americans and not illegal immigrants, but are taking advantage of a real problem to promote their own anti-corporate agendas. The press is in my opinion criminally negligent, but this is a historical problem.

This is not an immigrant-related problem, they're only hitching their wagon to the issue.

The more important problem of illegal immigration (I believe) will only be resolved by removing attractive, but illegal employment. And this will only be done by going after the employers, they are the ones bringing the burden that we're paying for, and they're the one's that are profiting from it. You're right that we taxpayers are the losers. This is something that no one in government seems to be willing to address.

The paper today was about some self-proclaimed 1965 wetback woman (her words) who works as a top saleswoman at Lacks Furniture. I wrote the opinions column. May 1st they are going to show their economic impact by not buying. I'm just plain fed up. I really need to get out of the phone book. My name will be with the opinion, then I have a disgruntled ex-employee and her big husband to deal with too.

Jose Karl,

After hearing of the plan (I doubt if it will happen) by the organizers of these illegal immigrant marches to stay home from work tomorrow, not buy anything, etc---I plan to go on a shopping bing. But does anyone really think that this will amount to anything?

On the part of the non-buyers, or the buyers?

And as to the much mentioned idea of enforcing the law against hiring illegals, the government is starting to do just that. I don't have the article handy, but it was in the papers last week about a crackdown on some of the biggest companies caught hiring illegals. They made raids on a big company that made pallets or something, because they had been under surveilance for a long time. The final straw was when they saw an illegal tearing up his W-2 form (because he had no intention of paying taxes).

I have said it before---as a longtime friend (whose father came from Mexico illegally many years ago) told me repeatedly----dry up the demand for the illegal jobs, and they will stop coming. He told me that the word about no new jobs here gets back to Mexico faster than FedEx could deliver it.

BTW, my friend's father eventually went through the process of becoming legal. But he told me he knows of many Mexicans coming here now that have no intention of doing that.

Why are there so many jobs for them with some big companies? Simply because a company's biggest expense item is not wages, but benefits. The companies hide the illegal workers from government scrutiny so as to get around having to pay them benefits. The illegal workers get no benefits from the company, but we all know that they get benefits. The benefits come from our government, in the form of free medical care, free education, etc. The company does not pay it, you and I pay for it. And we are going to pay even more for it unless it is stopped now.

Our government can do more to help stem this invasion, but they are too busy stemming the invasions of other countries!

I usually hate going to Walmart, but maybe it won't be so crowded tomorrow. I better get started on my list.

No, it will still be crowded. I'd bet on it.

The only places that won't be crowded is the ones where the greedy employers that hire illegals set up shop.

It appears that they may just lose their employees tomorrow.

That should be a good indication of where the illegals work. But that is just too simple for the INS people to figure out. Especially since they get their orders from Washington.

I was told by several of my Mexican friends today that they are going to boycott tomorrow, boycott everything but the beer joints!

See you there.
