Adventures In Sporterizing

While I was OA welding a bolt handle today I heard something drop on the floor. It turned out to be the end of my aluminum heat sink!

I had to drill the portion inside the bolt and remove it with an easy-out.

I'll have to wait for my order from midway to finish that task. (I ordered 2)

Wish I had a tig welder!

Kenny,

That's why I quit using aluminum heat sinks.

I find the closest steel bar lying around that will fit into the bolt (probably wishful thinking that this will provide a heat sink), wrap the front lugs in a wet rag and start welding.

When I get it all close with files and I'm convinced that I can't pull the handle off I heat up the camming surface and root of the handle to red heavy on the acetylene (it seems to harden this way) and loosen the vise so that it falls into a bucket of water below. Then I polish and cuss at any pits.

I wish I had TIG too, but I don't see it happening.

The OA comes in handy for so many things around here I can't justify having anything else just to put handles on bolts a couple times a year. But my bolts all have warts.

For a special rifle I think I'd try to sweet-talk Z into doing it for me (although I bet he's backed-up with all the good press he's been getting over at AR).
