Mill Speed

I'm getting set to do my first clip removal / bridge re-contour.

Can anyone recommend what rpm I should use?

My mill has 18 speeds from about 135 to 2300 rpm’s.

I’ll be using a ½” carbide end mill.

Thanks for the help.

Kenny.

For a quick reference you can use the formula of Cutting speed (CS) X 4/Diameter of cutter (D).

cs is around 125 with carbide and low carbon hardened alloy steel. 125X4/.5=1000RPM. Is the sleel is softer use 300 for a cut speed. Depending on the steel you can go up to 600cs, but if your chips are black or dark purple slow it down until they are amber. Feed rate depends on the # of flutes on the cutter.

Well that was fairly easy.

I used a 900 something mill speed, worked great, thanks for all the input.

The bridge was a little screwed-up to start with. The peak of the radius was off center and I was able to straighten that out somewhat. Turk quality control wasn't anywhere near the Germans.
