tinkerfive
a local fellow has 2 #100 lead ingots. he is asking $135 for both ( #200 for $135 ). should I invest now or pass it by? What do you all think is the going rate for #100 ingots of lead? Tinker

AzRednek
There is quite a difference in price between between linotype and scrap lead. I suggest you get on the phone and call local scrap dealers to get an idea of the going rate. Price seems to vary in different parts of the country. You can also grab a bathroom scale and bucket and go visit tire shops. Still 66 cents a pound doesn't seem to bad. Lead ingots go for about a buck a pound on Ebarf. Doble Troble
It's a good deal where I'm from. But you should have a plan to break them down to smelting size. If this isn't easy for you then the deal isn't so attractive. For thin ( ~ 1 " pieces) that I get, a reciprocating saw usually works without drama (wear a mask). For anything thicker you're looking at hammering a hatchet or similar semi-sharp object on all four sides until you can twist chunks off. This is work, but it does work. If you've got the Mother of all Smelters you're good to go.
