Removing Nickel Plating?

A couple of years ago I bought a Colt Frontier Scout .22 pistol in the original (numbered) box with all the original accessories and paperwork. It's not a re-finish and doesn't appear to have ever been turned, much less fired. Here's the kicker: It is a .22 LR/.22WMR convertible. The magnum cylinder in the box looks like crap. I'm certain it's not original to this gun. It's even nickel plated  My question to you guys is how do I go about removing the old flaking nickel so I can polish/blue this extra cylinder? I'll never install it in the gun so I don't care whether it even fits or not. It would just look better in the box, for whatever that's worth. ;) Besides, I need a small, inexpensive project since I'm almost through "freshening" up a Mauser project I built in '05. (I'll get a few pics once everything s re-assembled.) What's the best way to remove the old nickel plating?
