FC
Look at Ebay at Arizona Ironwood. I love this wood. It finishes great, and looks great. They sell a lot of knife "scales" there.

Tony if I'm not mistaken Arizona Ironwood is wild Mesquite. The wild trees grow in the desert getting very little water and the annual growth is very small. 25 years of growth and 25 annual tree rings may only be a few inches in diameter. It is rock hard, hard on tools and very difficult to cut and work with. I knew a guy years ago that sold it as drill blocks to machine shops. I like the looks of finished mesquite but I'm highly allergic to it. I get around a Mesquite tree in bloom my nose runs, eyes water, lungs fill up with fluid, ears build up with wax and I break out in a rash. Mesquite like many desert plants need the right combination of temperature and rain and can bloom just about anytime of the year.
FC
It makes darned good wooden pens. The wood doesn't look or work like mesquite, but maybe it's similar?
