OK guys, I need a little help. Does anyone know of an on line vendor who sells Rem. 45-70 GOVT. 405g jacketed bullets or same in another brand for reloading? My online supplier is out of them & I`ve been waiting over a month for them & they can`t give a time line when they will be in.

Thanks in advance.

Try this group, there might be a member that may be willing to part with some of his own. If and when you do see them available, stock up. Before the shortages we could count on Remington to make at least one annual run of the slow sellers. Not anymore and from I've heard on the net Remington no longer will say when a run is scheduled. Once they become available, grab'em, might be 2 years or longer before the make them again.

Midway has 400 grain jacketed by Barnes and Swift, but those certainly aren't cheap.

Both Speer and Remington 405s are slated for availability (according to Midway) is July/August. Odd that both would run out at the same time.

Do you have to have jacketed? Midway had a slew of 405 grain hard cast available, and for most 45/70 velocities, those are more than adequate. Reviews are fairly positive:

Penn also offers:

Beartooth bullets look good:

I agree. Especially at 45/70 velocities lead is adequate. Beside a box of Hornady Lever Revolution. Everything down my 45/70 has been cast lead. I haven't shot a 405gr but I do have a Lee mold that drops about 385 that does fairly well on paper. I also shoot lead in a 458 Winnie using 45/70 data with good results. I put a few 500+gr lead slugs through the 45/70 and all I got was a lousy shot string, a sore shoulder and was flinching so bad afterward. I called it a day. I can't speak on hunting as I've never used my 45/70 on game. Speaking for myself and other reloaders will say the same. If it ain't broke don't fix it. Find something that works well for you I can understand you being reluctant to change.

EDIT: If you do decide to convert or temporally use lead. Be sure to take the time and scrub the piss out of your bore. Copper fouling can ruin lead bullet accuracy, especially with Marlins PIA micro-groove rifling.
