  1. GREED !!!!!!! I hear none of the politicians or the news media mentioning that as a factor. All they talk about is supply and demand. Up to a point that may be true but I am convinced that Greed is a major factor. Period.
  2. I know I'm old fashioned but I like the white spacers. I know they are despised by many but to each their own I suppose. It looks good to me. Nice job.
  3. Thanks Rev for your service and the sacrafice of your time away from your family. I can only pray that Iraq and our own country will be the better for it as I believe they are. Glad to have you headed back home to safety.
  4. Anyone ever have something like this before? I am having a similar problem on a sporterized (by a previous owner) Brazilian intermediate action. I have not got into checking it out yet but the problem could be the same as yours. Some lapping compound in the appropriate area might solve the problem. Mine is difficult to close (no barrel installed) and even harder to open after dry fired. I am going to remove the firing pin spring and reassemble and try it to see if the cocking and uncocking could be the problem or if it is simply in a bind like yours.
  5. That's a very nice looking rifle. I was wondering: 1. How are you fitting the Ruger magazine to the Mauser action? 2. How are you addressing the bolt face size difference? 3. How are you addressing the extracter and ejecter difference? It's a very interesting project. I have thought about something like this myself. Seems that the 98 action is big and overkill for such a small cartridge but it is something different and I like it. I don't usually like thumbhole stocks and laminates but your rifle has changed my mind entirely. Please post more pictures when it's finished or work progresses.
  6. Now that is a man with true back bone. I admire his spirit very much. I would like to have seen the look on that insurgent's face when he saw his victim stand up and flip him the bird. Priceless!!!!!!! I hope the terrorist coward gets his soon!!!!!!!!
  7. I am considering a purchase of a Mosin. I know very little about them so I have some questions. Because of my eyes a scope will be a must and hence a different stock with a higher comb. I know about the bolt issue and will follow Steve Wagners tutorial on that part. Do any of the cheaper Mosins have better cosmetics and metal finish than the others? Other than barrel length, are any of the Mosins better suited to a sporterizing re-work of this type than others? I will shorten the barrel to 23" or less. I am thinking of a cheap deer rifle that I don't have to worry about getting banged up a little. I understand that these guns can be good, cheap shooters but in my opinion, the ones I have seen are cosmetically ugly as sin. I have to do at least a little for the aesthetics.
  8. Sounds like ASSUALT SAWS with high capacity batteries for sure. When are they going to get these things registered?????? That saw company will probably be sued for sure. Another walk by slasher!!!!!!!!!
  9. I am not familiar with the term "sand monkeys". Curiosity here, what are they? Prairie dogs perhaps?
  10. I think we should boycott any business that participated in this or knowingly uses illegals. I am for legal imigration but not for illegal criminals that are sucking our country down.
  11. I just received these figures in an email. Does anyone know if these figures are actually true? Some of the figures blow me away. If true, the gun grabbers should take note, but I am sure it would never soak into their thick heads. "Subject: Guns in Australia Sent: Sunday, April 23, 2006 12:14 AM Here's a thought to warm your hearts... From Ed Chenel, a police officer in Australia. Hi Yanks and Canadians - I thought you all would like to see the real figures from Down Under. It has now been 12 months since gun owners in Australia were forced by a new law to surrender 640,381 personal firearms to be destroyed by our own government, a program costing Australia taxpayers more than $500 million dollars. The first year results are now in: Australia-wide, homicides are up 3.2 percent, Australia-wide, assaults are up 8.6 percent; Australia wide, armed robberies are up 44 percent (yes, 44 percent)! In the state of Victoria alone, homicides with firearms are now up 300 percent. (Note that while the law-abiding citizens turned them in, the criminals did not! and criminals still possess their guns! While figures over the previous 25 years showed a steady decrease in armed robbery with firearms, this has changed drast ically upward in the past 12 months, since the criminals now are guaranteed that their prey is unarmed. There has also been a dramatic increase in break-ins and assaults of the elderly. Australian politicians are at a loss to explain how public safety has decreased, after such monumental effort and expense was expended in successfully ridding Australian society of guns. You won't see this on the American/Canadian evening news or hear your government or members of the State Assembly and Ottawa parliament disseminating this information. The Australian experience proves it. Guns in the hands of honest citizens save lives and property and, yes, gun-control laws affect only the law-abiding citizens. Take note Americans and Canadians before it's too >>late! "
  12. Dave, the way women are these days you probably got off easy. Speaking of upseting the wife though reminds me of a time years ago that I was working the third shift. (AKA "graveyard shift") I would sleep in a spare bedroom upstairs in the house for some quiet. One day the wife and kids (still home at that time) were downstairs and playing the TV real loud and banging things around. I yelled down a couple of times for them to quiet down but they didn't even hear me. Finally after trying for a long time to get some sleep I had had enough. I got up and started jumping up and down on the floor and then I got a brainstorm (or short circuit maybe) and I got my old bowling ball out of the closet and rolled it down the stairs. Yeah, I got her attention allright. She was mad at me for a week.
  13. Dave and Jim, you guys crack me up. I was laughing so hard I was and still am crying. I can just see your wives!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! LOL Basil
  14. I am so sorry to here of your loss. I will keep you and your family in my prayers. Although I have four brothers, I have never lost one yet and I know it would devestate me. My thoughts are with you. Try to be strong and you and your mother be there for each other. Basil
  15. OK, this is crude but it works good and it is fast to make. Before I retired I occasionally needed one at work but I knew that the company would never purchase one for me. So, after I thought about it some I simply bent a piece of bar stock say 1/2 x 1" x 8" into an "L" shape. You then put one end of the "L" in the tool holder and then the other leg of the "L" will be running paralell with the bed and you use two hose clamps to clamp an air grinder to it. By loosening the clamps you can move the grinder up and down some and it works surprisingly well. Just keep the bearings adjusted on the grinder and dress the stone carefully and it works good. Some stones and even thick cutoff wheels work better than others. Like I said it's crude but it works. A grinder doesn't put much force on the work like a tool bit so the hose clamps do OK. You can always make something more substantial later if you think you need it.
  16. I would appreciate a copy of that article too Tony. Thanks. Basil onewemr@aol.com
  17. I did just a little internet searching and found several states that protect snakes of all kinds and copperheads were mentioned specifically. I suspect that there are many states that have those laws. Very, very stupid. Another thing I don't understand is protecting crows. I have not researched the reasoning behind their being protected but on the surface it seems like another dumb law. I can't believe we flip the bill to pay these dumb ass politicians to sit around and dream up this crap. These idiots are more dangerous than the snakes.
  18. In the past year I was looking for some pictures of copperheads and I discovered that at least in some areas copperheads are protected by law now. My memory is foggy but I am pretty sure they are protected here in Indiana and I think some other states too. That is a stupid law in my opinion and I believe if they were wiped off the face of the earth we would all be the better for it. For all those that feel differently you are welcome to my share of all snakes as long as you keep them in YOUR BACK YARD.

    Barrel vise

I made my vise out of 2" square stock but I didn't get around to making the bushings because my lathe went down and I needed parts. I ended up buying five bushings from a man doing business on Ebay with the seller name of WALLYCOOPER. I don't know the man personally but I got the five bushings and the shipping for $29. Try that with Midway or Brownells or anyone else. It looks like he really has a good price on the barrel vises he sells on Ebay too. They look similar to mine, uses the 1 1/2" dia. bushings. He sells the bushings seperate or you can buy the vise with four bushings for a Buy it Now price of $75. Check out item number 7221600425 on Ebay. In my opinion this is a much better vise than the Wheelers. (sorry Wheeler owners) Like I said, I do not know this guy but he treated me right and just thought I would pass this info on to the group. My bushings worked great. Basil
  20. I bought one of these new years ago. I bought it becaused I liked the price at the time. It was $180 or $185. I use this gun for just plinking and since my eyes are not what they used to be, I put a red dot sight on it a couple of years ago. I also put some wood grips on it and for my intended purpose I love this gun better than ever. The accuracy amazes me.
  21. Z1R Will coat hanger rods for welding rust blue OK?
  22. What kind of welding rods work well for gas welding of bolt handles? I know Brownells sells some special (expenseive) rods but how about some alternatives? I haven't done too much gas welding but always learning.
