StuffIt
I am working on my first sporter and need some information. How much do you polish your barrel and action prior to blueing. I have military barrel that I have re-contoured and have gone over it with 400 grit emory cloth. Do you sand down any further than this to 600 grit and even farther putting it on a buffing wheel and putting on a bright finish? I guess I am looking for ideas for the best finish for rust blueing from the experts. Any help is appreciated. Thanks Stuart

MountainBear
I polish to 400 and then generally use scotchbrite to clean up my polish lines. I have also used a fine steel wire wheel to decent effect to prep for bluing on an older sporter restoration. I have polished up to a mirror finish, but honestly, outside Weatherby Rifles or S&W revolvers, I don't generally do that. I used to do a lot of bead blast and blue, but if I want that effect anymore, I use Cerakote finish.
