inthe10ring
Im not much of a maple guy, but seeing this out in New Hampshire last year i had to buy it. This is my first experience with this particular wood. Any advice on finishing this as to bring out the grain on the light part would be appreciated. inthe10ring
I really got lucky how the tip carved out
Dr.Hess
That's a beautiful piece. Sorry, but I am clueless on what to do with wood, but that's beautiful. I have one maple tree that I know of. It's about 2' in diameter. I would GUESS it is probably pushing a hundred years old.
Dr.Hess
Can you buy a piece of maple somewhere to experiment on?

I have several blanks and scraps of this. A friend of mine over on mausercentral recommended this product called aquafortis. It's pretty caustic (NH²O³) but really turns color when heated
Dr.Hess
That really brings it out. Definitely want to use gloves when working with that.
Horsefly
That’s a great looking hunk of wood. Beautiful !
FC
Wish I'd seen this sooner. I've worked with it. It's a soft maple. I'd just use a clear finish- no stain.
