Well, that was different.  Not bad, interesting.  I wonder how much of the actual culture of that land was in the book and how much was just made up.  If that's their actual culture coming through, man, nobody should ever step foot in the place, leave them alone.  No wonder they call that whole area the graveyard of empires.

I listened to an interview with him (I believe NPR) years ago and I believe he was some sort of police officer and became well acquainted with the hill people.

Though a work of fiction, it is based on the authors knowledge and experiences with these people.
